Objectives:
• Understand the history and evolution of animation in multimedia and web contexts.
• Identify key animation principles such as squash and stretch, anticipation, and timing.
• Explore industry-standard animation software and tools.
• Set up a workspace and create a simple bouncing ball animation.
• Evaluate the role of animation in user experience and storytelling.

Topics:
• Overview of animation: traditional, 2D, 3D, and stop-motion
• Core principles of animation (12 principles)
• Introduction to Adobe Animate, Blender, and web animation tools (CSS, JavaScript libraries)
• File formats and export settings for web and multimedia
• Hands-on: creating a bouncing ball animation in Adobe Animate

Day 2: Storyboarding and Character Design for Animation

Objectives:
• Develop a storyboard to plan animation sequences.
• Design characters with appealing proportions and expressions.
• Create character turnarounds and model sheets.
• Apply colour theory and visual style to character design.
• Translate storyboards into animatics.

Topics:
• Storyboarding techniques: shot composition, camera angles, timing
• Character design fundamentals: shapes, silhouettes, personality
• Creating model sheets and expression sheets
• Colour palettes and mood boards
• Hands-on: storyboard a short scene and design a simple character

Day 3: Keyframe Animation and Motion Tweens

Objectives:
• Differentiate between keyframes, in-betweens, and motion tweens.
• Animate objects using motion tweens in 2D software.
• Implement easing and interpolation for natural movement.
• Create loopable animations for web banners and icons.
• Optimise animation performance for web delivery.

Topics:
• Keyframe animation workflow
• Motion tweens vs. classic tweens
• Easing functions: ease-in, ease-out, bounce, elastic
• Looping techniques for seamless animations
• Hands-on: animate a looping loading spinner and a character walk cycle

Day 4: Advanced 2D Animation Techniques

Objectives:
• Apply masking and layering to create complex effects.
• Use bone rigging for character animation (cut-out style).
• Animate multi-layered scenes with parallax scrolling.
• Incorporate sound effects and synchronise audio with animation.
• Export animations with alpha channels for compositing.

Topics:
• Masking and alpha channels
• Cut-out animation with bone rigs (e.g., Adobe Animate armature)
• Parallax scrolling for depth
• Audio syncing: lip-sync and sound effects
• Hands-on: create a short scene with a character walking through a parallax background

Day 5: 3D Animation Fundamentals for Web and Multimedia

Objectives:
• Navigate 3D animation software interface (Blender).
• Model simple 3D objects using primitive shapes.
• Apply materials, textures, and lighting.

Objectives:
• Integrate 2D, 3D, and web animations into a cohesive multimedia project.
• Apply animation to enhance user interface (UI) and user experience (UX).
• Optimise animations for different devices and bandwidths.
• Compile a professional portfolio piece demonstrating animation skills.
• Understand career pathways and SAQA alignment for further learning.

Topics:
• Combining 2D/3D assets in a single project
• UI/UX animation principles: micro-interactions, loading states
• Performance optimisation: reducing file size, using hardware acceleration
• Portfolio presentation: showreel creation, case studies
• Industry trends: motion design, VR/AR animation, and emerging tools

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 30%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 70%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
