Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, a valid student pilot license or equivalent is recommended.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Take-Off Principles

Objectives:
• Understand the forces acting on an aeroplane during take-off
• Identify factors affecting take-off performance
• Describe take-off speeds and their significance
• Explain the effects of weight, altitude, and temperature on take-off
• Recognise standard operating procedures for take-off

• Aerodynamic principles: lift, thrust, drag, weight
• Take-off speeds: V1, Vr, V2
• Factors affecting take-off performance: weight, altitude, temperature, runway conditions
• Pre-take-off checks and briefings
• Normal take-off procedures
• Take-off distance calculations

Day 2: Take-Off Techniques and Rejected Take-Offs

Objectives:
• Execute normal and crosswind take-off techniques
• Demonstrate rejected take-off procedures
• Analyse take-off performance charts
• Apply techniques for short-field and soft-field take-offs
• Understand the role of crew resource management during take-off

• Normal take-off technique
• Crosswind take-off technique

Day 3: Landing Principles and Normal Landings

Objectives:
• Understand the forces and factors affecting landing
• Describe landing speeds and approach profiles
• Execute normal landing procedures
• Perform visual approach and landing techniques
• Apply correct flare and touchdown techniques

• Aerodynamics of landing: approach, flare, touchdown
• Landing speeds: Vref, Vat

Day 4: Advanced Landing Techniques and Go-Arounds

Objectives:
• Execute crosswind, short-field, and soft-field landings
• Demonstrate go-around procedures and decision-making
• Identify and manage landing emergencies
• Apply techniques for landing in adverse conditions
• Understand stabilised approach criteria

Topics:
• Crosswind landing technique
• Short-field and soft-field landings
• Go-around: initiation, procedures, and considerations
• Landing emergencies: engine failure, wind shear
• Stabilised approach concept
• Landing in adverse weather

Day 5: Integrated Operations and Performance Management

Objectives:
• Integrate take-off, landing, and go-around procedures
• Manage take-off and landing performance in real-world scenarios
• Apply decision-making for rejected take-offs and go-arounds
• Demonstrate proficiency in all phases of departure and arrival
• Evaluate and debrief flight performance

Overview

Practical flight training is essential for learners to apply theoretical knowledge to real aircraft operations. Supervised practice in a flight simulator or aircraft allows learners to develop psychomotor skills and decision-making abilities required for safe take-offs, landings, and go-arounds.

Practical Activities
  • Normal Take-Offs and Landings — Learner performs multiple normal take-offs and landings under instructor supervision, focusing on correct procedures and techniques. (5h)
  • Crosswind and Short-Field Operations — Learner practices crosswind take-offs and landings, as well as short-field techniques, to handle challenging conditions. (5h)
  • Rejected Take-Offs and Go-Arounds — Learner practices rejected take-offs at low speed and go-arounds from various approach stages, emphasizing decision-making. (5h)
  • Integrated Scenario-Based Training — Learner conducts complete departure and arrival cycles in simulated operational scenarios, including emergencies. (5h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
