Database Problem Solving With Graphical User Interface Applications Training

SAQA US 117927 | NQF 4 | Credits 6 | Duration 3 Days
From $967 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the skills to solve database problems using graphical user interface (GUI) applications. It focuses on designing, querying, and managing databases through intuitive interfaces, enabling efficient data handling and reporting in a business environment.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply GUI-based tools to create and modify database structures.
  • Analyze database problems to determine appropriate solutions using graphical interfaces.
  • Design queries to extract, filter, and manipulate data effectively.
  • Implement data integrity and security measures within a GUI database environment.
  • Demonstrate the ability to generate reports and summaries from database data.
  • Evaluate database performance and optimize queries for efficiency.

Target Audience

This course is ideal for IT professionals, database administrators, and business analysts who need to manage and solve database problems using GUI tools. It is also suitable for individuals seeking to enhance their database management skills for improved workplace productivity.

Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Database Design and GUI Concepts

Objectives:
• Understand the principles of relational database design and normalisation.
• Identify the components of a graphical user interface (GUI) and their role in database interaction.
• Create simple database tables with appropriate data types and constraints.
• Plan a basic GUI layout for data entry and retrieval.

Topics:
• Introduction to databases: tables, records, fields, and keys.
• Normalisation: 1NF, 2NF, 3NF and avoiding data redundancy.
• Entity-Relationship (ER) modelling and relational schema design.
• GUI fundamentals: windows, controls, events, and user interaction.
• Overview of database connectivity (ODBC, JDBC, ADO.NET).
• Hands-on: Creating a sample database with SQL CREATE statements.
• Hands-on: Designing a simple GUI mock-up for a data entry form.

Day 2: Implementing Database Queries and GUI Integration

Objectives:
• Write SQL queries for data manipulation (SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE).
• Connect a GUI application to a database using a programming language (e.g., Python, C#).
• Implement data binding between GUI controls and database fields.
• Handle user input validation and error messages in the GUI.

Topics:
• SQL DML: SELECT with WHERE, JOIN, GROUP BY, ORDER BY.
• Parameterised queries to prevent SQL injection.
• Database connection strings and connection pooling.
• GUI programming: event-driven programming and form load events.
• Data binding: populating list boxes, grids, and text fields.
• Input validation: required fields, data types, and constraints.
• Error handling: try-catch blocks and user-friendly error messages.
• Hands-on: Building a functional GUI application that queries a database.

Day 3: Advanced Features, Reporting, and Application Deployment

Objectives:
• Implement advanced GUI features such as search, filter, and pagination.
• Generate reports from database data using reporting tools or libraries.
• Understand transaction management and concurrency control.
• Deploy a database-driven GUI application in a test environment.

Topics:
• Advanced SQL: subqueries, views, and stored procedures.
• Search and filter functionality in GUI (e.g., search box, dropdown filters).
• Pagination: retrieving and displaying data in pages.
• Report generation: using Crystal Reports, SSRS, or Python libraries (e.g., ReportLab).
• Transaction management: BEGIN, COMMIT, ROLLBACK.
• Concurrency control: locking mechanisms and optimistic vs pessimistic locking.
• Deployment considerations: configuration files, installer creation, and testing.
• Hands-on: Complete a mini-project integrating all concepts (database, GUI, reporting).

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 30%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 70%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
