Course Outline

Day 1: Advanced Table Design and SQL Queries

Objectives:
• Design complex database tables with proper normalization and indexing.
• Write advanced SQL queries using JOINs, subqueries, and aggregate functions.
• Implement data integrity constraints and relationships.
• Understand the use of views and stored procedures.

Topics:
• Review of relational database concepts and normalization.
• Creating tables with primary keys, foreign keys, and indexes.
• Advanced SELECT queries: multi-table JOINs, subqueries, and UNION.
• Aggregate functions and GROUP BY with HAVING clauses.
• Data integrity: CHECK constraints, default values, and cascading actions.
• Introduction to views and stored procedures.
• Hands-on exercise: Design and populate a sample database.

Day 2: GUI Development and Integration with Databases

Objectives:
• Design and build a graphical user interface (GUI) for database interaction.
• Connect a GUI application to a database using appropriate drivers.
• Implement data entry, retrieval, update, and deletion via the GUI.
• Apply basic error handling and input validation.

Topics:
• Overview of GUI development tools (e.g., Visual Studio, Lazarus, or web-based).
• Designing forms: data entry fields, buttons, grids, and navigation.
• Database connectivity: connection strings, ODBC/JDBC, or ADO.NET.
• Executing SQL queries from the GUI: SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE.
• Displaying query results in data grids or list views.
• Error handling and validation techniques.
• Practical: Build a complete GUI application to manage a database.

Practicals

6 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Hands-on practicals are essential for learners to apply database design and query skills in a real-world context and to build a functional GUI application. Learners will work on structured exercises and a culminating project that integrates all concepts.

Practical Activities
  • Database Design and Advanced Queries — Learners create a normalized database with multiple tables, define relationships and constraints, then write advanced SQL queries including JOINs, subqueries, and aggregation. (3h)
  • GUI Application Development — Learners build a simple GUI application that connects to their database, allows data entry, displays records, and supports update and delete operations. (3h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
