Description

This course equips learners with the skills to describe, interpret, and represent mathematical patterns, functions, and algebra in various contexts. It enables participants to apply algebraic thinking to solve real-world problems, analyse relationships between variables, and communicate mathematical ideas effectively.

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe and explain the characteristics of mathematical patterns, relationships, and functions in different contexts.
  • Interpret and represent functions using tables, graphs, formulas, and words.
  • Apply algebraic techniques to solve problems involving patterns and functions.
  • Analyse the relationship between variables and predict outcomes using mathematical models.
  • Evaluate the appropriateness of different representations for given contexts.
  • Demonstrate the use of algebraic notation and conventions in solving problems.

Target Audience

This course is designed for individuals seeking to improve their mathematical literacy for workplace or further study, including administrative staff, technicians, and supervisors who need to interpret data and patterns in their daily tasks.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, basic numeracy and familiarity with arithmetic operations are recommended.

Course Outline

Day 1: Foundational Concepts of Patterns, Functions, and Algebra

Objectives:
• Identify and describe different types of number patterns (arithmetic, geometric, quadratic).
• Represent patterns using tables, graphs, and algebraic expressions.
• Understand the concept of a function and its notation.
• Differentiate between linear and non-linear functions.
• Apply basic algebraic manipulation to simplify expressions.

Topics:
• Introduction to patterns in real-life contexts (e.g., growth of plants, savings).
• Arithmetic and geometric sequences: definitions and examples.
• Representing patterns: tables, ordered pairs, graphs.
• Functions: domain, range, and function notation f(x).
• Linear functions: slope, intercepts, and graphical representation.
• Quadratic functions: simple examples and parabolas.
• Basic algebra: simplifying expressions, substitution, and solving linear equations.
• Practical exercises using patterns in workplace scenarios.

Day 2: Algebraic Representations and Problem Solving

Objectives:
• Formulate algebraic expressions and equations from word problems.
• Solve linear and quadratic equations using appropriate methods.
• Interpret and construct graphs of linear and quadratic functions.
• Apply inequalities and systems of equations to solve problems.
• Use algebraic models to make predictions in given contexts.

Topics:
• Translating word problems into algebraic equations.
• Solving linear equations: balancing method, transposition.
• Solving quadratic equations: factorisation, quadratic formula.
• Graphing linear functions: slope-intercept form, plotting points.
• Graphing quadratic functions: vertex, intercepts, symmetry.
• Inequalities: solving and representing on number lines.
• Systems of linear equations: graphical and algebraic solutions.
• Application problems: budgeting, resource allocation, trend analysis.

Day 3: Advanced Applications, Modelling, and Integration

Objectives:
• Model real-world data using appropriate functions (linear, quadratic, exponential).
• Interpret mathematical models to make decisions and predictions.
• Analyse patterns and functions in financial, scientific, and workplace contexts.
• Evaluate the reasonableness of solutions in context.
• Integrate multiple algebraic concepts to solve complex problems.

Topics:
• Exponential functions: growth and decay in finance (interest, depreciation).
• Modelling: fitting functions to data sets (linear regression basics).
• Interpreting graphs: trends, turning points, and rates of change.
• Financial applications: compound interest, annuities.
• Scientific contexts: distance-time, speed-time graphs.
• Workplace scenarios: production rates, cost analysis.
• Problem-solving with multiple representations (tables, graphs, equations).
• Review and assessment: comprehensive case study applying all concepts.

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 30%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 70%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
