Riemann Sum and Definite Integral for Area Under Curve Training

SAQA US 243831 | NQF 3 | Credits 5 | Duration 2 Days
From $832 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the skills to develop the Riemann sum formula and definite integral for calculating the area under a curve. It bridges the gap between theoretical calculus and practical applications in business, economics, and engineering, enabling learners to model and solve real-world problems involving accumulation and area.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply the Riemann sum formula to approximate the area under a curve using left, right, and midpoint sums.
  • Analyze the relationship between Riemann sums and the definite integral as the limit of sums.
  • Evaluate definite integrals using the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus and interpret the result as area under a curve.
  • Demonstrate the ability to calculate area under a curve for polynomial, exponential, and trigonometric functions.
  • Design and implement a step-by-step solution to find the area between two curves using definite integrals.

Target Audience

This course is designed for professionals, managers, and analysts who need to apply calculus concepts in fields such as finance, logistics, project management, and data analysis. It is also suitable for learners pursuing further studies in mathematics or engineering.

Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Riemann Sums

Objectives:
• Define Riemann sums and their role in approximating area under a curve.
• Differentiate between left, right, and midpoint Riemann sums.
• Calculate Riemann sums for simple functions using uniform partitions.
• Interpret the limit of Riemann sums as the number of subintervals increases.

Topics:
• Introduction to area under a curve: motivation and historical context.
• Partitioning intervals and creating subintervals.
• Left, right, and midpoint Riemann sums: definitions and examples.
• Sigma notation for sums.
• Effect of increasing the number of subintervals on approximation accuracy.
• Graphical interpretation of Riemann sums.

Day 2: Definite Integral and Practical Applications

Objectives:
• Define the definite integral as the limit of Riemann sums.
• State and apply the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus (Part 1 and 2).
• Evaluate definite integrals using antiderivatives for polynomial and simple functions.
• Apply definite integrals to compute area between a curve and the x-axis, and between two curves.

Topics:
• Definition of the definite integral: limit of Riemann sums.
• Properties of definite integrals: linearity, additivity, reversal of limits.
• Fundamental Theorem of Calculus: connection between differentiation and integration.
• Evaluating definite integrals using antiderivatives.
• Area under a curve: positive and negative regions.
• Area between two curves: setup and computation.
• Real-world applications: distance from velocity, total accumulation.

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 30%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 70%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
