This course equips participants with the knowledge and skills to understand and apply mechanical properties of bolts, screws, and welds in structural steelwork connections. It covers the selection, inspection, and installation of these fasteners to ensure safe and reliable structural integrity in accordance with South African standards.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Structural Steelwork Connections and Fasteners

Objectives:
• Understand the role of connections in steel structures
• Identify common types of bolts, screws, and welds
• Explain basic mechanical properties of steel
• Interpret connection terminology and symbols

Topics:
• Overview of structural steelwork connections
• Types of bolts: grade, size, and application
• Types of screws: self-tapping, structural, and machine
• Introduction to welding processes: arc, MIG, TIG
• Mechanical properties: yield strength, tensile strength, ductility
• Connection terminology: gusset, bracket, splice
• Symbols and notation in structural drawings
• Safety considerations in connection design

Day 2: Bolted Connections – Design, Installation, and Inspection

Objectives:
• Design bolted connections for shear and tension
• Select appropriate bolt grades and preload
• Apply installation procedures for high-strength bolts
• Inspect bolted joints using torque and tension methods

Topics:
• Bolt grades: 4.6, 8.8, 10.9, and their properties
• Preloading and torque control: turn-of-nut, direct tension
• Design for shear: bearing-type and slip-critical connections
• Design for tension: prying action and bolt groups
• Installation procedures: cleaning, alignment, tightening
• Inspection techniques: torque wrench, tension gauge
• Common defects: loose bolts, corrosion, misalignment
• Standards: SANS 1700, EN 1090

Day 3: Welded Connections – Processes, Design, and Quality

Objectives:
• Describe welding processes used in structural steelwork
• Design fillet and butt welds for strength
• Interpret weld symbols and specifications
• Identify welding defects and quality control measures

Topics:
• Welding processes: shielded metal arc (SMAW), gas metal arc (GMAW), flux-cored (FCAW)
• Weld types: fillet, butt, plug, slot
• Weld design: throat thickness, effective length
• Weld symbols per AWS/ISO standards
• Welding procedures: preheat, interpass temperature
• Quality control: visual inspection, non-destructive testing (NDT)
• Common defects: porosity, cracks, lack of fusion
• Welding codes: SANS 10163, AWS D1.1

Day 4: Mechanical Properties and Testing of Connections

Objectives:
• Apply mechanical property concepts to connection design
• Perform calculations for bolt and weld capacity
• Interpret test results from destructive and non-destructive methods
• Understand failure modes in connections

Topics:
• Stress-strain behaviour of steel
• Load paths and stress distribution in connections
• Capacity calculations: bolt shear, bolt tension, weld strength
• Failure modes: bolt fracture, weld rupture, plate tearing
• Destructive testing: tensile test, bend test
• Non-destructive testing: ultrasonic, magnetic particle, dye penetrant
• Factor of safety and limit state design
• Case studies: connection failures and lessons learned

Day 5: Integration, Standards, and Practical Application

Objectives:
• Integrate bolted and welded connections in a typical joint
• Apply relevant South African standards (SANS, EN)
• Assess connection performance under combined loads
• Prepare inspection reports and quality documentation

Topics:
• Combined connections: bolted-welded joints
• Design examples: beam-to-column, column base plate
• Standards review: SANS 10163, SANS 1700, EN 1993
• Load combinations: dead, live, wind, seismic
• Erection procedures and site safety
• Documentation: inspection checklists, test certificates
• Workshop: design a connection for a given load case
• Review and assessment

Practicals

16 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Practical sessions allow learners to apply theoretical knowledge to real connections. They will perform bolt tightening, weld sample inspection, and connection assembly using structural steel components under supervision.

Practical Activities
  • Bolt Installation and Torque Control — Learners practice installing high-strength bolts using torque wrenches and verifying preload with tension gauges. (4h)
  • Weld Sample Preparation and Inspection — Learners prepare weld coupons and perform visual inspection, identifying common defects like porosity and undercut. (4h)
  • Connection Assembly and Load Testing — Learners assemble a bolted-welded connection and apply load using a test frame to observe failure modes. (4h)
  • Non-Destructive Testing Demonstration — Learners observe and participate in ultrasonic and dye penetrant testing on welded joints. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
