Day 1: Introduction to Drainage Construction Management

Objectives:

• Overview of drainage in civil engineering
• Relevant legislation, SANS codes, and SAQA unit standards
• Types of drainage systems: surface, subsurface, stormwater
• Key elements of a drainage construction management plan
• Environmental considerations and water management principles
• Roles and responsibilities of the drainage construction manager

Day 2: Site Assessment and Drainage Design Principles

Objectives:
• Conduct a site assessment for drainage requirements
• Interpret geotechnical and hydrological data
• Apply basic hydraulic design principles for drainage systems
• Understand the integration of drainage with other civil infrastructure

Topics:
• Site investigation techniques: soil types, permeability, water table
• Hydrological analysis: rainfall data, runoff calculations
• Drainage design fundamentals: gradients, pipe sizing, catchments
• Materials selection: pipes, culverts, geotextiles, aggregates
• Coordination with road, earthworks, and structural designs

Day 3: Construction Planning and Resource Management

• Develop a drainage construction schedule and method statement
• Manage resources: labour, plant, materials, and subcontractors
• Implement quality control measures for drainage works
• Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations

Day 4: Installation Techniques for Drainage Systems

• Apply compaction and backfilling standards

Day 5: Monitoring, Testing, and Commissioning

• Conduct field tests to verify drainage system performance
• Monitor construction progress against specifications
• Commission drainage systems and hand over to client
• Identify and rectify common installation defects

Day 6: Maintenance and Rehabilitation of Drainage Systems

• Identify rehabilitation needs and select appropriate methods
• Manage emergency repairs and storm damage response

Day 7: Integration, Case Studies, and Assessment

• Demonstrate competence through a final assessment

Overview

Hands-on practical sessions are essential to develop competence in drainage construction techniques. Learners will engage in site setup, pipe laying, testing, and maintenance activities under supervision.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Site Assessment and Surveying — Learners conduct a site survey, measure gradients, and identify soil types using basic geotechnical tools. (6h)
  • Practical 2: Pipe Laying and Jointing — Learners excavate a trench, lay pipes to specified gradient, and perform jointing using appropriate methods. (8h)
  • Practical 3: Drainage Structure Installation — Learners install a precast manhole and connect pipes, ensuring watertightness and structural integrity. (4h)
  • Practical 4: Testing and Commissioning — Learners perform CCTV inspection, water tightness tests, and flow tests on installed drainage systems. (4h)
  • Practical 5: Maintenance and Cleaning — Learners simulate routine maintenance by jetting a blocked pipe and inspecting with CCTV. (2h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
