Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to work safely on or near live high voltage electrical equipment, including 3kV DC OHTE, 25kV and 50kV AC OHTE, and all transmission lines and associated equipment. It covers clearance procedures, live work practices, and adherence to safety regulations to prevent electrical incidents.

Target Audience

This course is intended for electrical technicians, linesmen, and safety personnel who are required to perform live work on high voltage equipment or maintain clearance from exposed live parts in transmission and distribution environments.

Prerequisites

Learners must be employed in an electrical environment and have access to relevant workplace procedures.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to High Voltage Electrical Systems and Safety

Objectives:
• Understand the fundamental principles of high voltage electrical systems.
• Identify the specific voltage levels: 3kV DC, 25kV AC, 50kV AC.
• Recognize the hazards associated with live high voltage equipment.
• Explain the legal and regulatory framework for high voltage work in South Africa.

• Basic electrical theory: Ohm's Law, power calculations.
• Health and safety legislation: OHS Act, regulations.
• Roles and responsibilities of personnel.

Day 2: Electrical Hazards and Risk Assessment

Objectives:
• Identify electrical hazards: shock, arc flash, arc blast.
• Conduct risk assessments for high voltage work.
• Apply hierarchy of controls to mitigate risks.
• Understand the principles of safe work practices.

• Types of electrical hazards and their effects.
• Risk assessment methodologies.
• Hierarchy of controls: elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls, PPE.
• Safe work permits and procedures.
• Case studies of high voltage incidents.

Day 3: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Safety Tools

Objectives:
• Select appropriate PPE for high voltage work.
• Inspect and maintain PPE and safety tools.
• Understand the limitations of PPE.
• Demonstrate proper use of insulating gloves, mats, and tools.

• Types of PPE: gloves, mats, blankets, helmets, arc flash suits.
• Inspection and testing of PPE.
• Storage and maintenance of PPE.
• Insulating tools: sticks, clamps, testers.
• Voltage-rated tools and equipment.
• Practical demonstration of PPE use.

Day 4: Working on 3kV DC Overhead Traction Equipment (OHTE)

Objectives:
• Describe the 3kV DC OHTE system components.
• Apply safety procedures specific to 3kV DC work.
• Perform isolation and earthing of 3kV DC equipment.
• Use proper techniques for live work on 3kV DC.

• Overview of 3kV DC traction systems.
• Components: catenary, contact wire, insulators.
• Safety procedures for 3kV DC.
• Isolation and earthing methods.
• Live work techniques and tools.

Day 5: Working on 25kV AC Overhead Traction Equipment (OHTE)

• Perform isolation and earthing of 25kV AC equipment.
• Understand differences between AC and DC working.

• Apply for and manage a Sanction for Testing.
• Coordinate with control room operators.
• Document and communicate clearance details.

• Sanction for Testing: purpose and process.

• Documentation: logs, permits, tags.
• Practical exercise: completing a clearance form.

Day 8: Live Work Techniques and Tools

• Describe live work methods for high voltage systems.
• Select appropriate tools for live work.
• Apply safe distances and approach limits.
• Perform live work tasks under supervision.

• Approach distances and boundaries.
• Live line tools: sticks, clamps, jumper cables.

• Practical exercise: hot stick work on a mock line.

Day 9: Earthing and Bonding Procedures

Objectives:
• Understand the principles of earthing and bonding.
• Install temporary earthing systems.
• Verify earthing effectiveness.
• Apply bonding to prevent induced voltages.

• Temporary earthing equipment: clamps, cables, rods.

Day 10: Emergency Response and Rescue

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
