Day 1: Introduction to Electrical Systems in the Rail Sector

Objectives:
• Understand the role of electrical systems in rail operations
• Identify key electrical components and their functions
• Recognise safety hazards associated with electrical work
• Explain the importance of compliance with relevant regulations

• Overview of rail electrical systems: traction, signalling, and auxiliary power
• Basic electrical theory: voltage, current, resistance, and power
• Common electrical materials: cables, connectors, switchgear, and transformers
• Introduction to relevant legislation: OHS Act, SANS standards, and rail-specific regulations
• Workplace safety: lockout/tagout procedures, personal protective equipment (PPE)

Day 2: Identification and Classification of Electrical Materials

Objectives:
• Classify electrical materials by type, rating, and application
• Read and interpret material labels, datasheets, and specifications
• Distinguish between low-voltage and high-voltage components
• Identify appropriate materials for different rail environments

• Cable types: power, control, and signal cables; armoured and unarmoured
• Connectors and terminations: lugs, splices, and junction boxes
• Switchgear: circuit breakers, isolators, and contactors
• Transformers and rectifiers: types and ratings
• Insulation materials: properties and selection
• Material coding systems: colour codes, markings, and certifications

Day 3: Handling and Storage of Electrical Materials

• Apply correct handling techniques to prevent damage
• Implement proper storage conditions for electrical components
• Identify risks related to moisture, dust, and temperature
• Follow inventory control procedures for electrical stock

• Handling procedures for sensitive components: anti-static precautions
• Storage requirements: temperature, humidity, and cleanliness
• Shelf life and expiry considerations for batteries and insulation
• Stacking and racking: weight limits and stability
• Inventory management: FIFO, labelling, and stock rotation
• Documentation: receiving reports, inspection records, and material requisitions

Day 4: Inspection and Testing of Electrical Materials

• Inspect electrical materials for visible defects and damage
• Perform basic continuity and insulation resistance tests
• Understand the use of multimeters and insulation testers
• Document inspection results and report non-conformances

• Tools: multimeter, megohmmeter, and voltage tester
• Continuity testing: procedure and interpretation
• Insulation resistance testing: minimum acceptable values

Day 5: Care and Maintenance of Electrical Systems

• Perform routine maintenance on electrical components
• Identify signs of wear and degradation
• Apply cleaning and lubrication techniques safely
• Understand the importance of scheduled maintenance plans

• Cleaning methods: dry, wet, and solvent-based; precautions
• Lubrication: types of lubricants for switches and contacts
• Tightening and torquing of connections: specifications and tools
• Replacement of worn components: fuses, brushes, and seals

Day 6: Fault Finding and Troubleshooting

• Diagnose common electrical faults in rail systems
• Implement corrective actions safely

Day 7: Practical Application and Assessment

• Complete a practical task: identification, handling, inspection, and fault-finding
• Demonstrate compliance with safety and quality standards
• Review and consolidate learning outcomes

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.
