Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Marine Propulsion Systems and Safety

Objectives:
• Identify the main components of small vessel propulsion systems
• Explain basic operating principles of diesel and outboard engines
• Apply safety procedures when working in engine compartments
• Describe the function of cooling, lubrication, and fuel systems
• Recognise common tools and equipment for service checks

Topics:
• Overview of marine propulsion types (inboard, outboard, sterndrive)
• Key components: engine, gearbox, propeller, shaft, rudder
• Safety protocols: lockout/tagout, ventilation, PPE, fire prevention
• Introduction to cooling systems (raw water, closed loop)
• Lubrication systems: oil types, levels, and filtration
• Fuel systems: tanks, lines, filters, and water separators
• Basic hand tools and diagnostic equipment
• Engine compartment inspection: leaks, corrosion, belts, hoses

Day 2: Routine Service Checks and Diagnostics

Objectives:
• Perform pre-start and post-operational checks on propulsion systems
• Measure fluid levels and interpret condition indicators
• Inspect and replace fuel and oil filters correctly
• Test battery, starting, and charging systems
• Identify abnormal noises, vibrations, or temperatures

Topics:
• Pre-start checklist: fluid levels, belt tension, battery voltage, fuel system priming
• Engine oil analysis: colour, smell, contamination
• Cooling system checks: impeller condition, thermostat operation, coolant level
• Fuel system service: draining water separator, replacing filters, bleeding air
• Electrical system testing: multimeter use, alternator output, starter draw
• Propeller inspection: damage, pitch, balance, and shaft alignment
• Gearbox and transmission: oil level and condition, shift linkage adjustment
• Troubleshooting common issues: overheating, hard starting, poor performance

Day 3: Integrated Service Procedures and Practical Application

Objectives:
• Execute a complete service routine on a small marine engine
• Document service findings and recommended actions
• Apply manufacturer specifications and maintenance schedules
• Demonstrate correct waste disposal and environmental practices
• Perform final operational test and sea trial checks

Topics:
• Comprehensive service walkthrough: from pre-start to post-run
• Using manufacturer manuals and service bulletins
• Service logbooks: recording checks, findings, and actions taken
• Environmental compliance: oil spill containment, waste oil disposal, recycling
• Post-service sea trial: monitoring gauges, listening for abnormalities
• Engine room housekeeping and corrosion prevention
• Customer communication: explaining findings and recommendations
• Final assessment: practical demonstration of service check procedure

Practicals

10 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Hands-on practical sessions are essential for learners to apply theoretical knowledge to real engines. Learners will perform service checks on actual marine propulsion systems, developing competence in inspection, fluid testing, filter replacement, and basic diagnostics under supervision.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Safety and Pre-Start Checks — Learners perform a full safety inspection and pre-start checklist on a small diesel or outboard engine, including PPE use, compartment ventilation, and lockout procedures. (2h)
  • Practical 2: Fluid Sampling and Filter Replacement — Learners drain and sample engine oil, replace oil and fuel filters, and bleed the fuel system. They also inspect coolant and gearbox oil. (3h)
  • Practical 3: Electrical and Cooling System Checks — Learners test battery voltage, alternator output, and starter draw using a multimeter. They also inspect cooling water flow and replace an impeller. (3h)
  • Practical 4: Complete Service Routine and Sea Trial — Learners perform a full service routine from start to finish, then accompany the instructor on a brief sea trial to monitor engine performance. (2h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
