Description

This course equips drivers with the knowledge and skills to assess their own fitness to drive, ensuring they are physically, mentally, and emotionally fit to operate a vehicle safely. It covers the impact of fatigue, illness, medication, and substance use on driving ability, promoting road safety and compliance with South African road traffic regulations.

Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Road User Fitness Assessment

Objectives:
• Understand the legal and regulatory framework for driver fitness assessment in South Africa.
• Identify the key components of physical, mental, and emotional fitness for safe driving.
• Explain the role of the assessor in evaluating road user fitness.
• Recognise common medical conditions and their impact on driving ability.

Topics:
• Introduction to SAQA Unit Standard 116129 and relevant legislation.
• Overview of road user fitness: physical, sensory, cognitive, and psychological aspects.
• Ethical and professional responsibilities of the assessor.
• Common medical conditions affecting driving: vision, hearing, epilepsy, diabetes, cardiovascular issues.
• Basic screening tools and checklists for initial assessment.
• Case studies: recognising fitness-related incidents on the road.

Day 2: Assessment Techniques and Tools

Objectives:
• Demonstrate the use of standardised assessment tools for driver fitness.
• Conduct physical and sensory assessments (vision, hearing, motor function).
• Apply cognitive and psychological screening methods.
• Interpret assessment results to identify potential risks.

Topics:
• Vision testing: acuity, field, contrast sensitivity, and depth perception.
• Hearing assessment: pure-tone audiometry and functional hearing checks.
• Motor function evaluation: range of motion, strength, coordination, reaction time.
• Cognitive screening: memory, attention, executive function, and decision-making.
• Psychological assessment: stress, fatigue, and substance use screening.
• Practical exercises: administering and scoring assessments.
• Recording and interpreting results using standardised forms.

Day 3: Advanced Assessment and Special Populations

Objectives:
• Evaluate fitness in drivers with chronic conditions or disabilities.
• Assess the impact of medications and substances on driving ability.
• Apply adaptive assessment techniques for special populations.
• Understand the role of functional capacity evaluations in driver assessment.

Topics:
• Assessing drivers with neurological conditions (e.g., stroke, Parkinson's, dementia).
• Evaluating drivers with musculoskeletal impairments and prosthetics.
• Medication side effects and polypharmacy: implications for driving.
• Substance use assessment: alcohol, drugs, and prescription misuse.
• Adaptive equipment and vehicle modifications: assessment and recommendations.
• Functional capacity evaluation (FCE) for driving: simulators and on-road tests.
• Case studies: complex cases and multidisciplinary referrals.
• Legal considerations: reporting fitness findings and confidentiality.

Day 4: Integration, Reporting, and Professional Practice

Objectives:
• Compile comprehensive fitness assessment reports.
• Develop recommendations and intervention plans for unfit drivers.
• Apply communication skills for delivering assessment outcomes.
• Integrate all learning into a simulated assessment scenario.

Topics:
• Report writing: structure, language, and legal requirements.
• Developing recommendations: restrictions, retraining, or license suspension.
• Referral pathways: occupational therapists, physicians, driving schools.
• Communication skills: delivering sensitive feedback to drivers and stakeholders.
• Ethical dilemmas and decision-making in borderline cases.
• Simulated assessment: full assessment from intake to report.
• Peer review and feedback on simulated cases.
• Course wrap-up: resources, professional development, and certification.

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
