Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of Electronic Test Instruments

Objectives:
• Identify and describe the function of common electronic test instruments.
• Explain the basic operating principles of multimeters, oscilloscopes, and signal generators.
• Demonstrate correct setup and safety procedures for using test instruments.
• Interpret basic measurements such as voltage, current, resistance, and frequency.

• Introduction to electronic test instruments and their applications.
• Safety precautions and handling of equipment.
• Multimeters: types, functions, and measurement techniques.
• Oscilloscopes: controls, probes, and waveform display.
• Signal generators: waveform types, frequency, and amplitude settings.
• Power supplies: constant voltage and constant current modes.
• Hands-on practice with basic measurements.
• Troubleshooting common measurement errors.

Day 2: Advanced Instrument Operation and Practical Integration

Objectives:
• Configure advanced instrument features for complex measurements.
• Analyze waveforms and signals using oscilloscope triggering and measurement functions.
• Apply instruments in circuit testing and fault-finding scenarios.
• Combine multiple instruments for system-level testing.

Topics:
• Advanced oscilloscope features: triggering, cursors, and math functions.
• Spectrum analyzers: frequency domain measurements.
• LCR meters: measuring inductance, capacitance, and resistance.
• Data logging and computer interfacing.
• Systematic troubleshooting using test instruments.
• Calibration principles and checks.
• Practical exercises: testing amplifiers, filters, and power supplies.
• Review and assessment.

Practicals

Overview

Hands-on practical sessions are integral to this course, allowing learners to apply theory to real-world instruments. Learners will perform measurements, set up equipment, and troubleshoot circuits under supervision, reinforcing safe and accurate operation.

Practical Activities
  • Basic Measurements with Multimeter and Power Supply — Learners measure voltage, current, and resistance on a simple circuit using a digital multimeter and a DC power supply. (2h)
  • Oscilloscope Waveform Analysis — Learners use an oscilloscope to display and measure sine, square, and triangle waves from a signal generator. (2h)
  • Circuit Troubleshooting with Test Instruments — Learners diagnose faults in a pre-built circuit using a multimeter, oscilloscope, and signal generator. (2h)
  • Integrated System Testing — Learners combine instruments to test an audio amplifier circuit, measuring input/output signals and power supply parameters. (2h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
