Course Outline

Day 1: Equine Biology, Behaviour and Basic Welfare

Objectives:
• Describe the external anatomy and common breeds of horses
• Explain normal equine behaviour and social structure
• Identify signs of good health and common indicators of illness
• Outline basic welfare principles and legal requirements

Topics:
• External anatomy, conformation and breed characteristics
• Equine behaviour: herd dynamics, communication and vices
• Signs of health: vital signs, body condition scoring
• Common health issues: colic, lameness, parasites
• Basic welfare: Five Freedoms, SAQA and animal protection legislation
• Safe handling and restraint techniques
• Routine health checks and record keeping

Day 2: Health Management, Nutrition and Practical Applications

Objectives:
• Apply knowledge of equine nutrition to meet maintenance and work requirements
• Develop a basic vaccination and deworming schedule
• Recognise signs of poor welfare and take appropriate action
• Demonstrate practical skills in handling, grooming and health assessment

Topics:
• Equine nutrition: feeds, feeding practices and water requirements
• Preventative health care: vaccinations, deworming, dental care
• Recognising and responding to injury and disease
• Hoof care and farriery basics
• Biosecurity and stable management
• Emergency first aid and when to call a veterinarian

Practicals

6 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house

Overview

Hands-on practical sessions allow learners to apply theoretical knowledge to real horses. Under supervision, learners practice safe handling, grooming, body condition scoring, vital sign assessment, and basic first aid procedures.

Practical Activities

Safe Handling and Restraint — Learners practice approaching, haltering, leading and tying horses safely, and using appropriate restraint techniques. (2h)
Health Assessment and Grooming — Learners perform a full health check including vital signs, body condition scoring, and complete grooming routine. (2h)
Basic First Aid and Hoof Care — Learners practice cleaning and bandaging wounds, applying a poultice, and performing basic hoof cleaning and inspection. (2h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
