Description

This course equips learners with the competencies to implement a problem plant species control programme in accordance with relevant legislation and best practices. Participants will gain practical skills to identify, manage, and control invasive alien plants, contributing to biodiversity conservation and ecosystem health.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Problem Plant Species and Control Principles

Objectives:
• Define problem plant species and their ecological and economic impacts
• Understand the legal framework for invasive species control in South Africa
• Identify key problem plant species in local contexts
• Explain integrated control principles and approaches
• Recognize the importance of planning and record-keeping

Topics:
• Overview of problem plant species: definitions, categories (invasive, alien, weeds)
• Ecological and economic impacts on biodiversity, water resources, agriculture
• Legal framework: Conservation of Agricultural Resources Act (CARA), National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act (NEMBA)
• Identification of common problem plant species (e.g., Lantana, Black Wattle, Prickly Pear)
• Integrated control principles: mechanical, chemical, biological, cultural
• Planning and record-keeping requirements for control programmes
• Safety and environmental considerations

Day 2: Planning and Designing a Control Programme

Objectives:
• Conduct site assessments and map problem plant infestations
• Set control objectives and prioritise areas
• Select appropriate control methods based on species and site conditions
• Develop a control programme plan with timelines and resources
• Understand budgeting and resource allocation

Topics:
• Site assessment techniques: surveying, mapping (GPS/GIS), density estimation
• Setting SMART objectives for control programmes
• Prioritisation criteria: ecological value, spread risk, cost-effectiveness
• Selection of control methods: manual, mechanical, chemical (herbicides), biological agents
• Developing a control programme plan: activities, timelines, responsibilities
• Budgeting: cost estimation for labour, equipment, chemicals, monitoring
• Documentation and record-keeping systems

Day 3: Control Methods and Techniques – Mechanical and Chemical

Objectives:
• Apply mechanical control methods safely and effectively
• Understand herbicide selection, mixing, and application techniques
• Calibrate application equipment for accurate dosing
• Demonstrate safe handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals
• Implement personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements

Topics:
• Mechanical control methods: manual removal, cutting, burning, mulching
• Chemical control: herbicide types (systemic, contact), modes of action
• Herbicide selection based on target species and environment
• Mixing and calculating correct dosages
• Application techniques: foliar spray, stem injection, basal bark, cut stump
• Calibration of spray equipment (knapsack, boom sprayer)
• Safety procedures: PPE, handling spills, storage, disposal
• Environmental precautions to protect non-target species and water sources

Day 4: Biological and Integrated Control, Monitoring and Evaluation

Objectives:
• Understand biological control agents and their use
• Integrate multiple control methods for effective management
• Monitor control programme progress and adjust strategies
• Evaluate effectiveness using key performance indicators
• Maintain records and report outcomes

Topics:
• Biological control: introduction of natural enemies (insects, pathogens)
• Case studies of successful biological control in South Africa
• Integrated control strategies: combining methods for synergy
• Monitoring techniques: fixed-point photography, transects, density counts
• Key performance indicators: reduction in infestation, regrowth rates, cost per hectare
• Adaptive management: adjusting plans based on monitoring data
• Reporting and documentation for compliance and funding
• Long-term maintenance and follow-up control

Day 5: Implementation, Compliance, and Practical Integration

Objectives:
• Implement a control programme plan in a field setting
• Comply with legal and safety requirements during operations
• Demonstrate teamwork and communication in control operations
• Complete documentation and reporting for a simulated programme
• Evaluate overall programme success and plan future actions

Topics:
• Field implementation of a control programme (simulated or real site)
• Compliance with legal requirements: permits, notifications, herbicide registration
• Safety briefings and risk assessments on site
• Team roles and communication during operations
• Record-keeping: daily logs, chemical usage, observations
• Post-operation evaluation: debrief, lessons learned
• Final assessment and certification requirements

Practicals

16 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Practical sessions are integral to this course, allowing learners to apply control techniques in real or simulated field conditions. Learners will practice plant identification, mechanical removal, herbicide mixing and application, equipment calibration, and safety procedures under supervision.

Practical Activities
  • Plant Identification and Site Assessment — Learners conduct a field survey to identify problem plant species, estimate infestation density, and map the area using GPS. (3h)
  • Mechanical Control Techniques — Learners practice manual removal, cutting, and stem-stumping of selected problem plants, using appropriate tools and safety gear. (4h)
  • Herbicide Mixing and Application — Learners calculate herbicide dosage, mix solutions, calibrate knapsack sprayers, and apply herbicides using foliar spray and stem injection methods. (5h)
  • Integrated Control and Monitoring — Learners implement an integrated control plan on a small plot, combining mechanical and chemical methods, and set up monitoring transects. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
