Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Wildlife Welfare

Objectives:
• Define wildlife welfare and distinguish it from animal rights and conservation.
• Identify common welfare issues affecting wild animals in captivity and free-ranging contexts.
• Describe the Five Freedoms and their application to wildlife.
• Recognise relevant South African legislation and ethical guidelines.
• Explain the role of human activities in wildlife welfare challenges.

• The Five Freedoms and wildlife-specific adaptations
• Common welfare issues: habitat loss, poaching, captivity, human-wildlife conflict
• Overview of South African legislation (e.g., NEMBA, Animal Protection Act)

• Case studies: welfare in rehabilitation centres, zoos, and game reserves
• Human-wildlife conflict: causes and welfare implications

Day 2: Assessing and Addressing Welfare Issues

Objectives:
• Apply welfare assessment tools to evaluate wildlife situations.
• Identify appropriate interventions for common welfare problems.
• Develop a basic welfare improvement plan for a given scenario.
• Understand the importance of record-keeping and reporting.
• Integrate welfare considerations into wildlife management practices.

Practicals

Overview

Hands-on practicals allow learners to apply welfare assessment tools and intervention techniques in simulated scenarios. These exercises reinforce theoretical knowledge and build skills in observation, documentation, and decision-making.

Practical Activities

Welfare Assessment Simulation — Learners observe video footage of captive and free-ranging wildlife, using a welfare assessment checklist to score indicators and identify issues. (2h)
Intervention Planning Exercise — Given a scenario (e.g., orphaned antelope, injured bird), learners develop a step-by-step intervention plan including capture, transport, and care. (2h)
Role-Play: Human-Wildlife Conflict Resolution — In groups, learners role-play a community meeting to address a human-wildlife conflict, proposing welfare-friendly solutions. (2h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
