Agricultural Drive Train Component Removal and Installation Training

Learning Outcomes

• Apply safety procedures and use appropriate personal protective equipment when working on agricultural drive train components.
• Demonstrate the correct techniques for removing and dismantling drive train components, including gearboxes, differentials, and final drives.

Target Audience

This course is designed for agricultural technicians, mechanics, and maintenance personnel who are responsible for servicing and repairing drive train systems on tractors, harvesters, and other farm machinery.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, participants should have basic mechanical experience or prior training in agricultural equipment maintenance.

Course Outline

Practicals

Overview

Practical sessions form the core of this course, allowing learners to apply theoretical knowledge to real agricultural drive train components. Under supervision, learners will remove, disassemble, inspect, reassemble, and install components, culminating in operational testing and fault-finding.

Practical Activities

• Component Removal and Inspection — Learners remove a PTO shaft and a gearbox from a training rig, inspect components for wear, and document findings. (5h)
• Disassembly and Measurement — Learners fully disassemble a gearbox, measure gear backlash and bearing clearances, and identify worn parts. (5h)
• Reassembly and Installation — Learners reassemble the gearbox with new seals and gaskets, install it onto the rig, and adjust alignments. (5h)
• Testing and Troubleshooting — Learners run the drive train under load, diagnose simulated faults (e.g., noise, vibration), and rectify them. (5h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.
