Day 2: Slitting Machine Components and Functions

Objectives:
• Describe the function of each major component.
• Identify knife types and their applications.
• Understand web path and tension control basics.
• Explain the role of sensors and controls.

• Knife types: shear, score, razor, and crush cut.
• Knife holders, anvils, and blade materials.

Day 3: Machine Setup and Preparation

Day 5: Quality Control and Inspection

• Document non-conformances and take corrective action.

Overview

The practicals are integral to this course, allowing learners to apply theoretical knowledge in a controlled workshop environment. Learners will gain hands-on experience in machine setup, operation, quality inspection, and maintenance tasks under supervision.

Practical Activities
  • Machine Setup and Knife Installation — Learners set up the slitting machine for a given job order, including selecting and installing knives, adjusting tension, and verifying safety devices. (12h)
  • Slitting Operation and Quality Inspection — Learners operate the machine to produce slit rolls, monitor process parameters, and perform in-process and final quality inspections. (14h)
  • Preventive Maintenance and Troubleshooting — Learners perform daily and weekly maintenance tasks, diagnose common mechanical and electrical faults, and replace worn components. (14h)
  • Knife Sharpening and Changeover — Learners sharpen shear knives using a grinder, set knife geometry, and perform a quick changeover for a different material. (6h)
  • Integrated Assessment Scenario — Learners independently set up, operate, and troubleshoot a slitting job while being assessed on all competencies. (6h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
