Learners will understand the principles of character design, page layout, and user interaction to create engaging digital characters and their accompanying pages.

Learning Outcomes

  • Analyse the requirements for character generating pages based on user needs and project specifications.
  • Design character generating pages that incorporate visual design principles and user interaction elements.
  • Implement character generating pages using appropriate software tools and technologies.
  • Evaluate the functionality and usability of character generating pages through testing and iteration.
  • Demonstrate the ability to troubleshoot and refine character generating pages for optimal performance.

Target Audience

This course is intended for graphic designers, multimedia artists, game developers, and web designers who wish to specialize in creating character-driven interactive content.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment

Topics:
• Overview of character generation in television and video production
• Historical development and current trends
• Key terminology: character generator, keyer, overlay, crawl, roll
• Types of character generators: hardware-based vs. software-based
• Basic components: input devices, display, memory
• Introduction to user interfaces and workflow
• Examples of character generating pages in various media contexts
• Safety and ergonomic considerations for workstation setup

Day 2: Design Principles and Typography

Objectives:
• Apply fundamental design principles to create effective character generating pages.
• Select appropriate typography for readability and aesthetic appeal.
• Understand colour theory and its application in character generation.
• Create simple page layouts using grids and alignment.

Topics:
• Design principles: balance, contrast, emphasis, unity, rhythm
• Typography basics: font families, sizes, weights, kerning, leading
• Colour theory: colour wheel, complementary colours, colour harmony
• Using colour for readability and branding
• Layout techniques: grids, margins, alignment
• Creating templates for consistency
• Accessibility considerations: contrast ratios, font legibility
• Practical exercise: design a lower third graphic

Day 3: Software and Tool Operation

Objectives:
• Operate a character generation software application to create basic pages.
• Utilise key features such as text entry, styling, and layering.
• Import and manage assets like logos and images.
• Apply animation effects such as crawl, roll, and reveal.

Topics:
• Introduction to a professional character generation software (e.g., Vizrt, ChyronHego, or CasparCG)
• Navigating the interface: workspace, panels, and shortcuts
• Creating and styling text: font, size, colour, outline, shadow
• Working with layers: ordering, grouping, transparency
• Importing graphics: logos, backgrounds, and still images
• Basic animation: keyframe basics, crawl, roll, wipe
• Saving and exporting pages for broadcast
• Troubleshooting common issues

Day 4: Advanced Page Design and Integration

Objectives:
• Design complex character generating pages with multiple elements and dynamic data.
• Integrate character generation with live production systems.
• Implement data-driven graphics using templates and scripts.
• Apply best practices for real-time operation in a broadcast environment.

Topics:
• Advanced layering and compositing techniques
• Working with templates and data-driven graphics (e.g., sports scores, news tickers)
• Integration with production switchers and automation systems
• Real-time control: playout, take, and transition commands
• Creating dynamic content: clocks, countdowns, RSS feeds
• Using scripts for automated updates
• Workflow for live events: coordination with director and technical director
• Quality control and testing before air

Day 5: Project and Review

Objectives:
• Complete a comprehensive character generating page project from brief to final output.
• Apply all learned skills to produce a professional-quality page.
• Review and critique work for adherence to design and technical standards.
• Prepare for assessment and certification requirements.

Topics:
• Project brief: design a set of character generating pages for a simulated broadcast (e.g., news, sports, or event)
• Planning and storyboarding
• Creating assets and templates
• Building and animating pages
• Integration with a simulated production environment
• Peer review and feedback session
• Final adjustments and export
• Summary of key learning points
• Preparation for unit standard assessment

Practicals

16 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Hands-on practical sessions are essential for learners to gain proficiency in operating character generation software and hardware. These supervised exercises allow learners to apply design principles, create and animate pages, and integrate them into a simulated broadcast workflow, directly meeting the unit standard outcomes.

Practical Activities
  • Basic Page Creation and Styling — Learners create a lower third graphic and a full-screen title page using a character generation software, applying typography and colour guidelines. (4h)
  • Animation and Layering — Learners add animation effects such as crawl, roll, and fade to their pages, and manage multiple layers including logos and images. (4h)
  • Data-Driven Graphics and Integration — Learners build a template that pulls live data (e.g., scores or time) and integrate their pages with a production switcher in a simulated live environment. (4h)
  • Comprehensive Project: Live Broadcast Simulation — Learners complete a set of character generating pages for a simulated news broadcast, from design to live playout, followed by peer review. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
