This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to effectively commission the publishing of project components. It covers the processes of planning, coordinating, and finalising the publication of project deliverables, ensuring quality and adherence to project specifications. Day 1: Introduction to Commissioning and Project Components

Objectives:

• Project lifecycle phases: planning, design, construction, commissioning, operation

• Commissioning standards and regulations in South Africa

Day 2: Commissioning Planning and Documentation

Objectives:
• Develop a commissioning plan
• Create commissioning documentation checklists
• Understand the importance of documentation for traceability

• Elements of a commissioning plan: scope, schedule, resources
• Pre-commissioning activities: inspections, checks, readiness
• Documentation types: checklists, test sheets, reports, handover documents
• Quality assurance and control in documentation
• Case study: commissioning plan for a typical project

Day 3: Pre-Commissioning Procedures and Safety

Objectives:
• Describe pre-commissioning procedures for mechanical and electrical systems
• Apply safety protocols during pre-commissioning
• Identify hazards and implement control measures

• Pre-commissioning activities: cleaning, flushing, pressure testing
• Electrical pre-commissioning: insulation testing, continuity checks
• Safety permits and lockout/tagout procedures

Day 4: Commissioning of Mechanical Systems

Objectives:
• Commission mechanical equipment such as pumps, compressors, and conveyors
• Verify alignment, lubrication, and operational parameters
• Troubleshoot common mechanical issues

Day 5: Commissioning of Electrical and Instrumentation Systems

• Commission electrical panels, motors, and switchgear
• Calibrate instrumentation and control devices
• Verify control logic and interlocks

• Motor meggering and rotation checks
• Instrument calibration: pressure, temperature, flow transmitters
• Control system verification: PLC inputs/outputs, SCADA
• Loop checks and functional testing

Day 6: Commissioning of Control Systems and Software

Objectives:
• Commission programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and distributed control systems (DCS)
• Test software logic and human-machine interfaces (HMI)
• Validate alarm and shutdown systems

• PLC/DCS commissioning: hardware checks, firmware updates

Day 7: Integrated Systems Testing and Start-Up

Day 8: Performance Verification and Acceptance Testing

Day 9: Commissioning of Auxiliary Systems (HVAC, Fire, Security)

• Commission HVAC systems for comfort and process requirements
• Test fire detection and suppression systems
• Verify security systems integration

• HVAC commissioning: airflow, temperature control, balancing
• Fire system testing: detectors, alarms, sprinklers, pumps

Day 10: Commissioning of Utilities (Water, Steam, Compressed Air)

Day 12: Commissioning Project Management and Review

Practicals

Overview

The practicals component provides hands-on experience with commissioning procedures for mechanical, electrical, and control systems. Learners will perform pre-commissioning checks, operate testing equipment, and troubleshoot real-world scenarios in a supervised workshop environment.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Pre-Commissioning Inspections and Safety — Learners conduct pre-commissioning inspections on a pump system, including cleaning, pressure testing, and lockout/tagout procedures. (8h)
  • Practical 2: Mechanical and Electrical Commissioning — Learners commission a motor-driven pump set: mechanical alignment, electrical insulation testing, and initial run. (12h)
  • Practical 3: Instrument Calibration and Control System Testing — Learners calibrate pressure and temperature transmitters, then test control logic in a PLC system using simulation. (12h)
  • Practical 4: Integrated System Start-Up and Troubleshooting — Learners start up a small integrated system (pump, valve, level control) and troubleshoot simulated faults. (12h)
  • Practical 5: Performance Testing and Documentation — Learners conduct a performance test on a compressed air system, analyze results, and compile a commissioning report. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
