Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Professional Text Editing

Objectives:
• Define the role and scope of a professional text editor
• Identify the core principles of effective written communication
• Understand the SAQA framework and Unit Standard 117946 requirements
• Establish the ethical standards for professional editing in South Africa

Topics:
• Introduction to the editing profession and its value
• Overview of Unit Standard 117946: Purpose and outcomes
• The communication process and barriers to clarity
• Core editing principles: accuracy, consistency, clarity, and appropriateness
• Introduction to South African English conventions
• Ethical considerations: confidentiality, plagiarism, and authorial voice
• The editor-client relationship and service agreements
• Practical exercise: Initial text assessment

Day 2: Grammar, Syntax, and Sentence Structure

Objectives:
• Apply the rules of Standard South African English grammar
• Analyse and correct common grammatical errors
• Construct clear, coherent, and varied sentences
• Use syntactic structures to enhance readability and flow

Topics:
• Parts of speech and their functions
• Common grammatical pitfalls (e.g., subject-verb agreement, pronoun reference)
• Sentence types: simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex
• Modifiers and their placement to avoid ambiguity
• Parallel structure and its importance
• Active vs. passive voice: appropriate usage
• Punctuation rules for clarity and effect
• Workshop: Grammar correction exercises

Day 3: Style, Tone, and Register

Objectives:
• Analyse and adapt writing style for different audiences and purposes
• Apply appropriate tone and register to various text types
• Enhance textual consistency through style guides
• Develop sensitivity to cultural and contextual nuances in South African texts

• Defining style, tone, and register
• Audience analysis and purpose-driven editing
• Formal, informal, and technical registers
• Introduction to major style guides (e.g., APA, Harvard, house styles)
• Creating and applying a style sheet
• Cultural sensitivity and inclusive language in the South African context
• Editing for different genres: reports, articles, manuals, creative writing
• Practical session: Rewriting text for a different audience

Day 4: Structural and Substantive Editing

Objectives:
• Evaluate and improve the overall structure and logic of a document
• Apply techniques for substantive (content) editing
• Enhance argument development, coherence, and organisation
• Provide constructive feedback on content and structure

Topics:
• The levels of editing: substantive vs. copyediting
• Assessing macro-structure: logic, flow, and argument
• Techniques for restructuring paragraphs and sections
• Improving transitions and coherence
• Fact-checking and verifying content
• Querying authors effectively and diplomatically
• Using outlines and reverse outlines for structural analysis
• Case study: Substantive edit of a sample document

Day 5: Copyediting and Mechanical Precision

Objectives:
• Execute precise copyediting for spelling, punctuation, and consistency
• Apply proofreading symbols and digital editing tools
• Ensure adherence to typographical and formatting standards
• Develop a systematic approach to detailed text checking

• The copyediting process: a methodical approach
• Spelling: South African conventions and common errors
• Advanced punctuation for precision
• Consistency in abbreviations, numbers, dates, and capitals
• Formatting standards for different document types
• Introduction to proofreading symbols and track changes
• Using software tools (e.g., spell-check, grammar-check) judiciously
• Hands-on lab: Intensive copyediting exercise

Day 6: Specialised Editing and Reference Techniques

Objectives:
• Apply editing skills to specialised texts (technical, academic, legal)
• Verify and standardise references and citations
• Edit visual elements and their integration with text
• Manage complex documents with multiple elements

• Editing technical and scientific documents
• Working with academic texts: citations, references, and bibliographies
• Introduction to legal and regulatory editing considerations
• Tables, figures, and graphics: editing captions and integration
• Cross-referencing and internal consistency
• Indexing and glossary development
• Editing for accessibility and plain language principles
• Practical application: Editing a multi-element report

Day 7: Professional Practice and Final Integration

Objectives:
• Integrate all editing skills in a comprehensive final project
• Apply quality assurance processes to edited work
• Develop a professional workflow and time management strategy
• Plan for continuous professional development in the field

• The complete editing workflow: from manuscript to final proof
• Quality assurance and the final read-through
• Time management, pricing, and quoting for editing jobs
• Building a professional portfolio and CV

• Final comprehensive editing project under simulated conditions

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
