Day 1: Introduction to Medical Terminology and Anatomical Planes

Day 2: The Skeletal and Muscular Systems

Objectives:
• Identify major bones and their functions.
• Describe types of joints and their movements.
• Explain muscle types and mechanisms of contraction.
• Relate skeletal and muscular systems to blood supply.

Day 3: The Cardiovascular System

Objectives:
• Describe the anatomy of the heart and blood vessels.

Day 4: Blood Composition and Haematology

Day 5: The Lymphatic and Immune Systems

Day 6: The Respiratory and Digestive Systems

• Identify digestive organs and their functions.
• Understand absorption and metabolism.

• Lungs, pleura, and alveoli

Day 7: The Urinary and Endocrine Systems

Day 8: Blood Transfusion Terminology and Procedures

• Understand transfusion protocols and documentation.

Day 9: Transfusion Safety, Complications, and Practical Integration

Objectives:
• Identify transfusion reactions and their management.
• Apply haemovigilance principles.
• Integrate anatomy, physiology, and terminology in case studies.
• Prepare for practical assessment.

Practicals

24 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Hands-on practical sessions reinforce theoretical knowledge through blood typing, cross-matching, and simulated transfusion procedures. Learners will practise laboratory techniques and interpret results in a controlled environment.

Practical Activities
  • Blood Typing and Cross-matching — Learners perform ABO and Rh typing using commercial antisera and conduct cross-matching tests with donor and recipient blood samples. (8h)
  • Component Preparation and Storage — Learners simulate whole blood processing into components (packed red cells, platelets, plasma) and practise proper storage and labelling. (6h)
  • Simulated Transfusion Administration — Using mannequins and simulated blood products, learners practise patient identification, product verification, and transfusion set-up. (6h)
  • Haemovigilance and Case Studies — Learners analyse case studies of transfusion reactions and complete haemovigilance reports using standard forms. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
