Barometric Pressure Measurement with Electronic and Mechanical Instruments Training

SAQA US 259642 | NQF 2 | Credits 2 | Duration 1 Day
From $691 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and practical skills to accurately measure barometric pressure using both electronic and mechanical instruments. It ensures that participants can select, calibrate, and interpret readings from barometers in various occupational settings, supporting weather monitoring and process control. The training emphasizes safety, precision, and compliance with relevant standards.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain the principles of barometric pressure and its significance in meteorological and industrial contexts.
  • Demonstrate the correct use of electronic barometers, including setup, calibration, and data logging.
  • Demonstrate the correct use of mechanical barometers, such as aneroid and mercury barometers, ensuring accurate readings.
  • Apply appropriate corrective factors (e.g., temperature, altitude) to obtain true barometric pressure values.
  • Analyze measurement results to identify trends and anomalies, and report findings in a standard format.
  • Evaluate instrument performance and troubleshoot common errors in barometric pressure measurement.

Target Audience

This course is designed for technicians, engineers, and environmental health practitioners who require competence in barometric pressure measurement for weather observation, aviation, or industrial applications.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, basic numeracy and familiarity with scientific instruments are advantageous.

Course Outline

Day 1: Barometric Pressure Measurement Principles and Instruments

Objectives:
• Explain the principles of barometric pressure measurement.
• Differentiate between electronic and mechanical barometric instruments.
• Describe the applications of barometric pressure measurement in various industries.
• Identify key components and operating procedures for each instrument type.
• Perform basic calibration checks on barometric instruments.

Topics:
• Introduction to barometric pressure: units, atmospheric pressure, and measurement principles.
• Mechanical instruments: aneroid barometers, mercury barometers, and their operation.
• Electronic instruments: capacitive, piezoresistive, and MEMS sensors.
• Comparison of accuracy, resolution, and environmental factors affecting measurements.
• Calibration standards and traceability to national reference.
• Safety considerations when handling mercury and electronic instruments.
• Data logging and interpretation of barometric trends.
• Troubleshooting common issues in the field.

Practicals

3 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Learners will gain hands-on experience using both mechanical and electronic barometric instruments. Practical sessions include taking measurements, performing calibration checks, and interpreting data under simulated field conditions.

Practical Activities
  • Using a Mechanical Aneroid Barometer — Learners take barometric pressure readings using an aneroid barometer and compare with a reference standard. (1h)
  • Electronic Barometric Pressure Sensor Calibration — Using a portable pressure calibrator, learners calibrate an electronic barometric sensor and verify its accuracy. (1h)
  • Field Measurement and Data Logging — Learners take multiple pressure readings at different locations using both instrument types and log data for analysis.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
