This course equips participants with the knowledge and skills to create inclusive workplaces that accommodate persons with disabilities. It covers legal frameworks, universal design principles, and practical strategies for removing barriers, ensuring equal opportunities, and fostering a culture of respect and accessibility.

Course Outline

Day 1: Understanding Disability and the Legal Framework

Objectives:
• Define disability and explore different types of disabilities.
• Understand the social and medical models of disability.
• Identify key South African legislation (Employment Equity Act, Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act).
• Recognise the role of the Constitution and SAQA in promoting disability inclusion.

• Types of disabilities: physical, sensory, intellectual, psychosocial.
• Overview of relevant South African laws and policies.
• Rights of persons with disabilities in the workplace.
• Employer obligations under the Employment Equity Act.

• Case studies: legal compliance and consequences.

Day 2: Creating an Inclusive Culture and Communication

Objectives:
• Describe the importance of inclusive workplace culture.
• Apply appropriate language and etiquette when interacting with persons with disabilities.
• Identify barriers to inclusion in the workplace.
• Develop strategies for effective communication with diverse disabilities.

• Building an inclusive organisational culture.
• Disability etiquette: language, respect, and sensitivity.
• Communication strategies for visual, hearing, and cognitive disabilities.

Day 3: Accessibility and Reasonable Accommodation

Objectives:
• Define reasonable accommodation and its legal basis.
• Identify physical and digital accessibility requirements.
• Conduct a basic accessibility audit of the workplace.
• Develop a reasonable accommodation plan for an employee.

• What is reasonable accommodation? Legal requirements.
• Types of accommodations: physical, technological, procedural.
• Accessibility standards: building, signage, and ergonomics.
• Digital accessibility: websites, documents, and software.
• Conducting an accessibility audit.
• Cost-benefit analysis of accommodations.

Day 4: Inclusive Recruitment, Retention, and Career Development

Objectives:
• Design inclusive job descriptions and recruitment processes.
• Implement accessible interview and selection methods.
• Create retention strategies for employees with disabilities.
• Support career advancement and training opportunities.

• Inclusive job advertising and application processes.
• Accessible interview techniques and reasonable adjustments.
• Onboarding employees with disabilities.
• Mentoring and sponsorship programs.

Day 5: Implementation, Monitoring, and Continuous Improvement

• Develop a disability inclusion policy and action plan.
• Establish monitoring and evaluation mechanisms.
• Train staff and promote disability awareness.
• Foster partnerships with disability organisations.
• Review and sustain inclusive practices over time.

• Creating a disability inclusion policy.
• Developing an action plan with timelines and responsibilities.
• Monitoring compliance and gathering feedback.
• Conducting disability awareness training for all staff.
• Engaging with disability organisations and experts.
• Celebrating successes and addressing gaps.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
