Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, learners should have basic literacy and communication skills.

Course Outline

Day 1: Foundational Communication Principles and Legal Context

Objectives:
• Understand the legal and ethical context of communicating with persons in trouble with the law.
• Identify barriers to effective communication and strategies to overcome them.
• Apply active listening and questioning techniques in simulated interactions.
• Demonstrate non-verbal communication awareness and cultural sensitivity.
• Recognise the importance of confidentiality and professional boundaries.

• Overview of unit standard 120281 and learning outcomes
• Legal framework: rights of persons in trouble with the law
• Ethical considerations: respect, dignity, impartiality
• Communication process: sender, receiver, feedback, noise
• Barriers: language, emotion, power dynamics, trauma
• Active listening: paraphrasing, summarising, reflecting
• Questioning techniques: open vs closed, probing
• Non-verbal communication: body language, tone, eye contact
• Cultural sensitivity and diversity awareness
• Confidentiality and professional boundaries

Day 2: Advanced Communication Skills and Practical Application

Objectives:
• Apply assertiveness and conflict resolution techniques in challenging interactions.
• Use de-escalation strategies to manage anger and aggression.
• Adapt communication style for vulnerable populations (e.g., youth, mentally ill).
• Practice written communication: reports and statements.
• Demonstrate integrated communication skills in role-play scenarios.

• Conflict resolution models (e.g., Thomas-Kilmann)
• De-escalation techniques: calm tone, non-threatening posture
• Managing anger and aggression: safety considerations
• Communicating with vulnerable groups: trauma-informed approaches
• Written communication: factual reporting, clarity, objectivity
• Documentation: incident reports, witness statements
• Role-play scenarios: arrest, interview, victim support
• Feedback and self-reflection on communication

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
