This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to identify, assess, and manage the effects of fatigue in the workplace. It focuses on implementing control measures to reduce fatigue-related risks and promoting a culture of safety and well-being.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify the causes and effects of fatigue on health, safety, and performance.
  • Assess fatigue risks using appropriate tools and techniques.
  • Implement control measures to mitigate fatigue in the workplace.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of fatigue management strategies.
  • Demonstrate compliance with relevant legislation and organizational policies.
  • Promote a fatigue-aware culture through communication and training.

Target Audience

This course is designed for supervisors, team leaders, health and safety representatives, and any employees responsible for managing workplace fatigue risks.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment.

• Understand the relationship between fatigue, health, and safety

Topics:
• What is fatigue? Types and symptoms
• Causes of fatigue: sleep loss, work schedules, health factors
• Consequences: errors, accidents, health problems
• South African legislation: OHSA, BCEA, and industry-specific regulations
• The cost of fatigue to employers and employees

Day 2: Sleep Science and Circadian Rhythms

Objectives:
• Explain the science of sleep and circadian rhythms
• Describe the stages of sleep and their importance
• Identify factors that disrupt sleep and recovery
• Apply sleep hygiene principles to improve alertness

Topics:
• Circadian rhythms and the body clock
• Sleep stages: NREM and REM
• Sleep debt and recovery sleep
• Factors affecting sleep: light, noise, caffeine, alcohol
• Sleep hygiene strategies
• Shift work and its impact on circadian rhythms

Day 3: Fatigue Risk Assessment and Management

Objectives:
• Conduct a basic fatigue risk assessment in the workplace
• Identify high-risk tasks and work schedules
• Apply the Fatigue Risk Management System (FRMS) framework
• Develop strategies to mitigate fatigue risks

Topics:
• Principles of risk assessment: hazard identification, risk evaluation
• Fatigue risk factors: shift timing, duration, workload
• Fatigue Risk Management System (FRMS) components
• Engineering and administrative controls
• Personal protective measures
• Case studies: fatigue-related incidents

Day 4: Work Scheduling and Shift Design

Objectives:
• Design shift schedules that minimise fatigue
• Evaluate different shift patterns and their fatigue impact
• Implement strategies for managing shift work
• Understand the role of break management and napping

Topics:
• Shift patterns: fixed, rotating, night shifts
• Principles of good shift design: forward rotation, adequate rest
• Break management: frequency, duration, timing
• Napping strategies: power naps, planned napping
• Fatigue management policies and procedures

Day 5: Monitoring and Measuring Fatigue

Objectives:
• Use subjective and objective tools to measure fatigue

• Training and communication strategies
• Incident investigation and root cause analysis
• Review and continuous improvement
• Final assessment and course wrap-up

Practicals

16 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Practicals provide hands-on experience in conducting fatigue risk assessments, using fatigue monitoring tools, and designing shift schedules. Learners apply theoretical knowledge to realistic workplace scenarios, enhancing their ability to implement effective fatigue management strategies.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Fatigue Risk Assessment Simulation — Learners work in groups to conduct a fatigue risk assessment for a simulated workplace scenario, identifying hazards and recommending controls. (4h)
  • Practical 2: Sleep Diary and Fatigue Self-Monitoring — Learners complete a sleep diary and use a fatigue scale to self-monitor over a period, then analyse their data to identify patterns and improvement areas. (4h)
  • Practical 3: Shift Schedule Design Exercise — Given a set of operational requirements and workforce constraints, learners design an optimal shift schedule that minimises fatigue risk. (4h)
  • Practical 4: Using Fatigue Monitoring Technology — Learners use a psychomotor vigilance test (PVT) device and interpret results to assess fitness-for-duty in a simulated context. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
