Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Intellectual Disability

Objectives:
• Define intellectual disability and its key characteristics.
• Understand the prevalence and causes of intellectual disability.
• Discuss the social and historical context of intellectual disability in South Africa.
• Identify the role of support workers in promoting optimal functioning.

Topics:
• Definition and classification of intellectual disability (DSM-5, ICD-10).
• Aetiology: genetic, prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal causes.
• Prevalence and demographics in South Africa.
• Historical perspectives: institutionalisation to community inclusion.
• Ethical considerations and human rights frameworks (UNCRPD).
• Overview of the unit standard 117502.

Day 2: Models of Disability and Support

Objectives:
• Compare medical, social, and biopsychosocial models of disability.
• Analyse the implications of each model for support practices.
• Explain the concept of 'optimal functioning' within a person-centred framework.
• Apply the International Classification of Functioning (ICF) to case scenarios.

Topics:
• Medical model vs social model vs biopsychosocial model.
• The ICF framework: body functions, activities, participation.
• Person-centred planning: principles and practices.
• Strengths-based approach and empowerment.
• Case studies illustrating different models.

Day 3: Communication and Interpersonal Skills

Objectives:
• Understand communication barriers faced by people with intellectual disabilities.
• Develop skills in using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC).
• Practise active listening and non-verbal communication.
• Demonstrate respectful and inclusive interaction techniques.

Topics:
• Communication challenges: expressive and receptive language.
• AAC systems: low-tech (pictures, symbols) and high-tech (speech-generating devices).
• Active listening, paraphrasing, and validation.
• Non-verbal cues and environmental adaptations.
• Role-play: effective communication scenarios.

Day 4: Assessment and Individualised Support Planning

Objectives:
• Conduct functional assessments in collaboration with the person and team.
• Identify strengths, needs, preferences, and goals.
• Develop individualised support plans (ISPs) that promote autonomy.
• Monitor and evaluate progress using person-centred outcome measures.

• Assessment tools: Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, Supports Intensity Scale.
• Involving the person, family, and multidisciplinary team.
• Writing SMART goals and objectives.
• Components of an ISP: daily living, social, vocational, health.
• Reviewing and updating plans based on feedback.

Day 5: Supporting Daily Living Skills

Objectives:
• Teach and support self-care skills (hygiene, dressing, feeding).
• Promote independence in household tasks and community living.
• Use task analysis and prompting hierarchies.
• Adapt environments to enhance functioning.

Topics:
• Self-care: bathing, toileting, oral hygiene, grooming.
• Domestic skills: meal preparation, cleaning, laundry.
• Community living: shopping, using public transport.
• Task analysis: breaking down complex tasks.
• Prompting: least-to-most, fading, chaining.
• Environmental modifications: visual schedules, labelling.

Day 6: Behavioural Support and Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)

Objectives:
• Understand the functions of challenging behaviour.
• Apply principles of positive behaviour support.
• Conduct functional behaviour assessments (FBA).
• Develop proactive strategies to reduce challenging behaviour.

Topics:
• Definitions of challenging behaviour: aggression, self-injury, stereotypic behaviour.
• Functions: communication, sensory, escape, tangible.
• PBS framework: prevention, teaching, reinforcement.
• FBA: ABC charts, interviews, direct observation.
• Developing behaviour support plans (BSPs).
• Crisis management and de-escalation techniques.

Day 7: Health and Wellbeing

Objectives:
• Identify common health issues in people with intellectual disabilities.
• Promote healthy lifestyles: nutrition, exercise, sleep.
• Understand medication management and side effects.
• Recognise signs of pain, distress, and mental health conditions.

Topics:
• Common comorbidities: epilepsy, obesity, dental problems, sensory impairments.
• Health promotion: diet, physical activity, routine check-ups.
• Medication: administration, monitoring, side effects (antipsychotics, anticonvulsants).
• Mental health: anxiety, depression, trauma-informed care.
• Pain assessment tools for non-verbal individuals.

Day 8: Social Inclusion and Community Participation

Objectives:
• Facilitate social skills development and peer relationships.
• Support participation in community activities and employment.
• Address barriers to inclusion: stigma, accessibility.
• Advocate for the rights of people with intellectual disabilities.

• Social skills training: turn-taking, sharing, conversation.

Day 10: Legal and Ethical Issues

• Understand South African legislation: Mental Health Care Act, CRPD.
• Apply principles of consent, capacity, and guardianship.
• Recognise and report abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
• Maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.

• South African legal framework: Constitution, Mental Health Care Act 17 of 2002.
• Informed consent: capacity assessment, substitute decision-making.
• Guardianship and curatorship.
• Abuse: types (physical, sexual, financial), signs, reporting procedures.

Day 11: Transition Planning Across the Lifespan

Objectives:
• Plan transitions: school to adulthood, residential changes, ageing.
• Support person-centred transitions with appropriate resources.
• Collaborate with educational, vocational, and aged care services.
• Address grief and loss during transitions.

• Transition from school: further education, employment, day programmes.

Day 12: Assistive Technology and Environmental Adaptations

• Train individuals and staff in technology use.

Day 13: Crisis Intervention and Safety

• Understand emergency procedures and first aid.

Day 14: Professional Development and Self-Care

• Engage in continuous professional development (CPD).
• Build resilience through self-care practices.

• Self-awareness: values clarification, cultural competence.

• Supervision models and reflective practice.
• Creating a personal self-care plan.

Day 15: Integration, Evaluation, and Action Planning

Objectives:
• Synthesise knowledge and skills from the course.
• Develop an action plan for implementing learning in practice.
• Evaluate personal competence and identify areas for growth.
• Participate in a simulated case conference.

• Review of key concepts: person-centred support, PBS, communication.
• Case study integration: developing a comprehensive support plan.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
