This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to promote gender equality and women's empowerment through education and development initiatives. Participants will explore the socio-economic importance of gender equality and learn to design and implement training programmes that foster inclusive growth. Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment

Objectives:
• Define key concepts: gender, sex, gender equality, and women's empowerment.
• Analyse the historical and current status of gender inequality in South Africa.
• Understand the legislative and policy frameworks promoting gender equality.
• Recognise the role of education in challenging gender stereotypes and discrimination.

Topics:
• Understanding gender vs. sex and intersectionality.
• Overview of gender inequality indicators in South Africa.
• South African Constitution, CEDAW, and relevant policies.
• Gender socialisation and its impact on education.
• Case studies: Gender disparities in access and outcomes.
• Introduction to feminist pedagogies.

Day 2: Strategies for Mainstreaming Gender in Education and Development

Objectives:
• Apply gender analysis tools to educational contexts.
• Design inclusive curricula and teaching practices.
• Identify barriers to women's participation in development programmes.
• Develop strategies to promote gender-sensitive learning environments.

Topics:
• Gender analysis frameworks (e.g., Harvard Analytical Framework).
• Gender-responsive budgeting in education.
• Curriculum review for gender bias.
• Inclusive teaching methods and materials.
• Addressing gender-based violence in educational settings.
• Mentorship and leadership programmes for women.
• Monitoring and evaluation of gender mainstreaming.

Day 3: Implementing and Advocating for Gender Equality Initiatives

Objectives:
• Develop a gender equality action plan for an educational or development organisation.
• Evaluate the impact of gender equality interventions.
• Advocate for policy changes and resource allocation.
• Build partnerships and networks for sustained change.

Topics:
• Stakeholder engagement and community involvement.
• Designing gender equality action plans.
• Measuring outcomes: indicators and data collection.
• Advocacy strategies and communication.
• Case studies of successful initiatives.
• Overcoming resistance and sustaining momentum.
• Creating networks and alliances.
• Reflective practice and continuous improvement.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
