Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Victim Empowerment and Public Health

Objectives:
• Define victim empowerment and its relevance within a public health framework.
• Explain the public health model and its application to victimisation.
• Identify the social determinants of health that influence victimisation.
• Describe the cycle of violence and its impact on individual and community health.
• Recognise the roles of various stakeholders in victim empowerment.

• Overview of the public health approach: primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention.
• Social determinants of health and their link to victimisation.
• The cycle of violence: understanding victimisation patterns.
• Impact of victimisation on physical, mental, and social well-being.
• Key stakeholders in victim empowerment: government, NGOs, community structures.
• Ethical considerations and confidentiality in victim support.
• Case studies illustrating victimisation from a public health perspective.

Day 2: Prevention Strategies and Support Mechanisms

Objectives:
• Analyse primary prevention strategies to reduce victimisation risk.
• Apply secondary prevention interventions for early identification and support.
• Evaluate tertiary prevention approaches for recovery and reintegration.
• Develop referral pathways and collaborative networks.
• Demonstrate trauma-informed care principles in victim support.

• Primary prevention: community education, awareness campaigns, policy advocacy.
• Secondary prevention: screening tools, risk assessment, crisis intervention.
• Tertiary prevention: counselling, rehabilitation, long-term support services.

Day 3: Practical Integration and Programme Implementation

• Apply monitoring and evaluation techniques to assess programme effectiveness.
• Address challenges and barriers in victim empowerment service delivery.
• Advocate for victim-centred policies and resource allocation.
• Create an action plan for implementing victim empowerment initiatives in own context.

• Monitoring and evaluation: indicators, data collection, feedback loops.
• Challenges in victim empowerment: stigma, underreporting, resource constraints.

• Self-care and vicarious trauma prevention for service providers.
• Case study analysis: successful victim empowerment programmes.
• Action plan development: participants outline steps for implementation.
• Course wrap-up and reflection on integrating learning into practice.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
