This course equips learners with the skills to manage interpersonal conflict constructively and restore damaged relationships in the workplace. Participants will learn to identify conflict triggers, apply resolution strategies, and foster a collaborative environment that enhances team cohesion and productivity.

Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Conflict and Communication

Objectives:
• Define conflict and its sources in personal and professional contexts
• Identify different conflict styles and their typical outcomes
• Explain the role of effective communication in preventing and managing conflict
• Recognise the impact of emotions and perceptions on conflict situations
• Apply basic active listening and questioning techniques

Topics:
• Understanding conflict: definitions, types, and common causes
• The conflict cycle: escalation, stalemate, and de-escalation
• Introduction to conflict styles (competing, collaborating, compromising, avoiding, accommodating)
• Core communication principles for conflict situations
• The role of self-awareness: emotions, triggers, and biases
• Foundational skills: active listening, paraphrasing, and open-ended questioning
• Overview of the SAQA unit standard 117845 and course framework

Day 2: Analysing Conflict and Managing Emotions

Objectives:
• Apply tools to systematically analyse conflict situations
• Manage personal emotional responses during conflict
• Recognise and interpret non-verbal communication cues
• Facilitate initial constructive dialogue between parties
• Develop strategies for de-escalating tense situations

Topics:
• Conflict analysis frameworks (e.g., conflict mapping, the Triangle of Satisfaction)
• Emotional intelligence in conflict: self-regulation and empathy
• Non-verbal communication: body language, tone, and facial expressions
• Techniques for emotional de-escalation and creating psychological safety
• Initiating difficult conversations: setting the tone and stating purpose
• Identifying underlying interests versus stated positions
• Practical role-play: analysing a simulated conflict scenario

Day 3: Negotiation and Collaborative Problem-Solving

Objectives:
• Distinguish between positions and interests in negotiation
• Apply principled negotiation techniques to find mutually beneficial solutions
• Generate creative options for resolving conflicts
• Use objective criteria to evaluate potential agreements
• Practice facilitating a collaborative problem-solving process

Topics:
• Introduction to negotiation theory: distributive vs. integrative bargaining
• The Harvard Principled Negotiation model (separate people from the problem, focus on interests, invent options, use objective criteria)
• Brainstorming and option generation techniques
• Developing and using objective standards and fair procedures
• Building agreement: drafting solutions and testing for durability
• Overcoming common barriers to collaboration
• Practical exercise: negotiating a resolution in a case study

Day 4: Mediation and Third-Party Intervention Skills

Objectives:
• Explain the role and principles of a mediator
• Structure and facilitate a basic mediation process
• Apply advanced questioning and reframing techniques
• Manage power imbalances and impasse during mediation
• Draft clear and actionable mediation agreements

Topics:
• The mediation process: stages and mediator's role
• Key mediator skills: neutrality, impartiality, and managing the process
• Advanced communication techniques: reframing, summarising, and reality-testing
• Handling difficult dynamics: power imbalances, strong emotions, and cultural differences
• Strategies for breaking impasse and generating movement
• Documenting outcomes: writing a memorandum of understanding or agreement
• Role-play simulation: conducting a mediation between two parties

Day 5: Integration, Restoration, and Application

Objectives:
• Design a personal action plan for applying conflict resolution skills
• Facilitate relationship restoration and reconciliation processes
• Evaluate the effectiveness of conflict resolution interventions
• Apply skills to complex, multi-party, or organisational conflicts
• Prepare for assessment against SAQA unit standard 117845

Topics:
• From resolution to restoration: rebuilding trust and repairing relationships
• Applying skills to team, family, and community conflicts
• Complex conflict scenarios: multi-party disputes and systemic issues
• Monitoring and evaluation: assessing the success of resolutions
• Developing a personal and professional conflict competence plan
• Course integration: reviewing key concepts and skills from Days 1-4
• Final assessment preparation and submission guidelines for unit standard 117845

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
