• Overview of conflict resolution as a core competency
• Introduction to the unit standard 117855 and learning outcomes

Day 2: Conflict Resolution Models and Theories

Objectives:
• Describe classic conflict resolution models
• Understand the Thomas-Kilmann Instrument (TKI) and its five modes
• Apply theoretical frameworks to real-world scenarios
• Evaluate the strengths and limitations of each model

• The conflict process: stages from latent to manifest
• Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument: competing, collaborating, compromising, avoiding, accommodating
• Interest-based relational (IBR) approach
• The dual-concern model
• Situational factors influencing mode selection
• Practical exercise: identifying personal conflict style

Day 3: Communication Skills for Conflict Resolution

• Develop active listening techniques
• Use assertive communication to express needs
• Apply non-verbal communication awareness
• Manage emotions during difficult conversations

• Active listening: paraphrasing, reflecting, and summarising
• Assertive communication: 'I' statements and respectful expression
• Non-verbal cues: body language, tone, and eye contact

Day 4: Negotiation and Problem-Solving Techniques

Objectives:
• Differentiate between positional and interest-based negotiation
• Apply principled negotiation (Harvard method)
• Use collaborative problem-solving steps
• Generate win-win outcomes

• Positions vs. interests: uncovering underlying needs
• The seven elements of principled negotiation
• BATNA, WATNA, and ZOPA concepts
• Brainstorming and option generation
• Building consensus and reaching agreement
• Case study: negotiating a resource allocation conflict

Day 5: Mediation and Third-Party Intervention

Objectives:
• Understand the role of a mediator in conflict resolution
• Outline the mediation process and stages
• Demonstrate impartiality and neutrality
• Practice mediation techniques in simulated disputes

• When to use mediation: voluntary, confidential, and structured
• Stages of mediation: opening, storytelling, problem-solving, agreement
• Mediator skills: reframing, summarising, and reality testing

Day 6: Managing Difficult Personalities and Emotions

Day 7: Conflict Resolution in Teams and Groups

• Address and resolve groupthink and polarisation

• Facilitation skills for group discussions

Day 8: Cross-Cultural and Diversity Considerations

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
