This course equips church congregation members and pastoral teams with foundational skills in Christian pastoral care. Participants learn to provide compassionate emotional and spiritual support, maintain ethical boundaries, and refer complex cases to professional counselors, thereby strengthening the caring capacity of local faith communities.

Target Audience

This training is designed for church volunteers, lay ministers, deacons, elders, and any congregation members who wish to develop practical pastoral care skills to support others in their faith community.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Pastoral Care

Objectives:
• Understand the biblical and theological foundations of pastoral care.
• Define pastoral care and differentiate it from counselling and ministry.
• Identify the role of the pastoral caregiver in the church congregation.
• Recognise the importance of confidentiality and ethical boundaries.

Topics:
• Biblical basis for pastoral care (e.g., Good Shepherd, 2 Corinthians 1:3-4).
• Historical development of pastoral care in the church.
• Key principles: compassion, presence, and listening.
• Distinction between pastoral care, counselling, and spiritual direction.
• Ethical guidelines and confidentiality.
• Self-awareness and personal readiness for caregiving.

Day 2: Listening and Communication Skills

Objectives:
• Develop active listening skills essential for pastoral care.
• Learn techniques for empathetic and non-judgmental communication.
• Practice reflective listening and open-ended questioning.
• Understand barriers to effective listening.

Topics:
• Active listening: attending, paraphrasing, and summarising.
• Empathy vs. sympathy.
• Non-verbal communication and body language.
• Asking open-ended questions.
• Avoiding common pitfalls: advice-giving, interrupting, and judging.
• Role-play exercises in pairs.

Day 3: Understanding Human Development and Crisis

Objectives:
• Gain insight into lifespan development and its impact on pastoral care.
• Identify common life crises and transitions.
• Learn to assess the spiritual and emotional needs of individuals.
• Develop a basic understanding of grief and loss.

Topics:
• Overview of Erik Erikson's psychosocial stages.
• Spiritual development across the lifespan.
• Types of crises: situational, developmental, and existential.
• Introduction to grief theories (Kübler-Ross, Worden).
• Pastoral responses to loss and bereavement.
• Case studies on life transitions.

Day 4: Pastoral Care in Times of Illness and Suffering

Objectives:
• Understand the theological meaning of suffering.
• Learn to provide comfort to the sick and their families.
• Develop skills for hospital visitation and home care.
• Explore the role of prayer and scripture in healing ministry.

Topics:
• Theodicy: why suffering exists.
• Practical aspects of visiting the sick.
• Praying with and for the ill.
• Anointing of the sick and laying on of hands.
• Supporting caregivers and families.
• Ethical considerations in end-of-life care.

Day 5: Marriage and Family Pastoral Care

Objectives:
• Identify common marital and family challenges.
• Learn to provide pre-marital and marital counselling support.
• Understand family systems theory and its application.
• Develop skills for mediating conflict within families.

Topics:
• Biblical view of marriage and family.
• Pre-marital counselling basics.
• Communication patterns in couples.
• Conflict resolution and reconciliation.
• Parenting challenges and support.
• Blended families and special needs.

Day 6: Mental Health and Pastoral Care

Objectives:
• Recognise signs of common mental health conditions.
• Learn appropriate pastoral responses to mental illness.
• Understand the limits of pastoral care and when to refer.
• Reduce stigma around mental health in congregations.

Topics:
• Depression, anxiety, and trauma: signs and symptoms.
• Pastoral support for those with mental illness.
• Suicide prevention and intervention.
• Referral pathways to professionals.
• Self-care for caregivers.
• Creating a mentally healthy church environment.

Day 7: Pastoral Care for the Elderly and Dying

Objectives:
• Understand the unique needs of the elderly.
• Learn to provide spiritual care for the dying.
• Develop skills for conducting funerals and memorial services.
• Support families through the dying process.

• Ageing and spirituality.
• Reminiscence and life review.
• Palliative care and hospice partnerships.
• Advance care planning.
• Funeral liturgy and eulogies.
• Grief support after death.

Day 8: Pastoral Care in Crisis and Trauma

Objectives:
• Learn principles of crisis intervention.
• Provide immediate emotional and spiritual support in trauma.
• Understand the impact of trauma on faith.
• Develop a crisis response plan for the congregation.

Topics:
• Types of trauma: accidents, violence, natural disasters.
• Psychological first aid.
• Spiritual struggles after trauma.
• Debriefing and defusing techniques.
• Organising congregational crisis response.
• Long-term support for trauma survivors.

Day 9: Pastoral Care for Diverse Populations

Objectives:
• Appreciate cultural diversity in the South African context.
• Learn to provide care across different age groups and backgrounds.
• Understand the needs of marginalised groups.
• Develop inclusive pastoral practices.

Topics:
• Cultural competence in pastoral care.
• Pastoral care for youth and children.
• Supporting singles, divorced, and widowed.
• LGBTQ+ inclusion and sensitivity.
• Pastoral care for people with disabilities.
• Cross-cultural communication.

Day 10: Group Pastoral Care and Community Building

Objectives:
• Learn to facilitate support groups.
• Understand the dynamics of group pastoral care.
• Develop skills for leading small groups and prayer groups.
• Foster a caring community within the congregation.

• Types of pastoral groups: grief, marriage, recovery.
• Group facilitation skills.
• Building trust and confidentiality in groups.
• Peer support models.
• Integrating newcomers into community.
• Evaluating group effectiveness.

Day 11: Self-Care and Boundaries for Pastoral Caregivers

Objectives:
• Recognise signs of burnout and compassion fatigue.
• Develop a personal self-care plan.
• Establish healthy boundaries in caregiving relationships.
• Understand the importance of supervision and support.

Topics:
• Identifying stress and burnout.
• Spiritual disciplines for caregivers.
• Time management and prioritisation.
• Setting emotional and relational boundaries.
• Peer support and mentoring.
• Referral and when to say no.

Day 12: Integration, Assessment, and Action Plan

Objectives:
• Integrate all skills learned into a comprehensive pastoral care framework.
• Develop a personal pastoral care action plan.
• Evaluate learning through case studies and role-play.
• Prepare to implement pastoral care ministry in the local church.

Topics:
• Review of key concepts and skills.
• Case study analysis and group discussion.
• Role-play complex pastoral scenarios.
• Creating a congregational pastoral care strategy.
• Resources and further training.
• Personal commitment and action plan.

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
