Description

This course equips technicians with the practical skills and theoretical knowledge required to install electronic equipment safely and in compliance with industry standards. Participants will learn to interpret installation specifications, select appropriate tools and materials, and perform installations that meet operational requirements.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Electronic Equipment and Safety

Objectives:
• Understand the scope of electronic equipment installation
• Identify relevant safety regulations and standards
• Recognise common hazards and risk mitigation methods
• Apply basic safety procedures for installation sites

• Overview of electronic equipment types and applications
• Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) requirements
• Personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe work practices
• Hazard identification and risk assessment
• Safe handling of tools and equipment
• Emergency procedures and first aid basics
• Introduction to installation documentation and specifications

Day 2: Fundamentals of Electrical and Electronic Principles

Objectives:
• Explain basic electrical concepts (voltage, current, resistance)
• Interpret circuit diagrams and symbols
• Understand AC/DC power supplies and distribution
• Apply Ohm’s Law and power calculations

Topics:
• Electrical units and measurement instruments
• Series and parallel circuits
• Circuit protection devices: fuses, breakers, RCDs
• Introduction to electronic components (resistors, capacitors, diodes)
• Power supply types and ratings
• Wiring colour codes and standards
• Basic troubleshooting using multimeters

Day 3: Tools, Test Equipment and Installation Hardware

Objectives:
• Identify and select appropriate hand and power tools
• Use test equipment correctly (multimeter, oscilloscope, signal generator)
• Understand mounting hardware and enclosures
• Apply torque and fastening standards

Topics:
• Hand tools: cutters, strippers, crimpers, screwdrivers
• Power tools: drills, impact drivers, cable pullers
• Test equipment operation and safety
• Cable types and connectors (coaxial, twisted pair, fibre optic)
• Enclosure types (IP ratings) and mounting methods
• Cable management: trays, conduits, trunking
• Labelling and documentation practices

Day 4: Reading and Interpreting Installation Drawings

Objectives:
• Read schematic and wiring diagrams
• Interpret floor plans and elevation drawings
• Understand symbols and legends
• Identify cable routes and termination points

Topics:
• Types of drawings: block, schematic, wiring, layout
• Symbols for electronic components and devices
• Reading cable schedules and termination lists
• Scaling and measurement on drawings
• Coordination with architectural and mechanical drawings
• Site survey and as-built documentation

Day 5: Cable Installation and Termination Techniques

Objectives:
• Install cables following routing plans
• Terminate various cable types correctly
• Apply strain relief and cable support
• Test continuity and insulation resistance

Topics:
• Cable pulling techniques and tension limits
• Bending radius and derating factors
• Termination of coaxial cables (BNC, F-type)
• Termination of twisted pair cables (RJ45, punch-down blocks)
• Fibre optic connectorisation (ST, SC, LC)
• Soldering and crimping best practices
• Cable testing: continuity, insulation, and signal integrity

Day 6: Equipment Mounting and Rack Installation

Objectives:
• Mount equipment in racks and enclosures
• Manage cable entry and dressing
• Provide proper ventilation and cooling
• Secure equipment against vibration

Topics:
• Rack types (19-inch, open frame, wall-mount)
• Equipment mounting hardware and spacing
• Cable management: vertical/horizontal organisers, D-rings
• Power distribution units (PDUs) and UPS integration
• Grounding and bonding requirements
• Thermal management: fans, vents, heat sinks
• Labelling equipment and cables

Day 7: Power Supply and Backup Systems Installation

Objectives:
• Install AC/DC power supplies for electronic equipment
• Connect and configure uninterruptible power supplies (UPS)
• Verify voltage and polarity
• Implement surge protection

Topics:
• Power supply specifications and selection
• Wiring power inputs and distribution
• UPS types (offline, line-interactive, online) and installation
• Battery connections and safety
• Surge protective devices (SPDs) and placement
• Power quality testing and monitoring
• Emergency power-off (EPO) systems

Day 8: System Integration and Commissioning

Objectives:
• Interconnect multiple equipment components
• Configure basic device settings (IP addresses, DIP switches)
• Perform system-level tests
• Document installation and as-built changes

Topics:
• Integration of sensors, controllers, and actuators
• Network cabling and switch configuration basics
• System commissioning procedures and checklists
• Functional testing: input/output verification
• Signal loop checks and calibration
• Troubleshooting common installation faults
• Creating as-built documentation and test reports

Day 9: Quality Assurance, Handover and Maintenance

Objectives:
• Conduct final inspection and quality checks
• Prepare handover documentation and user manuals
• Understand preventive maintenance schedules
• Apply continuous improvement principles

• Quality assurance standards (ISO, SANS)
• Inspection checklists and sign-off procedures
• Handover documentation: O&M manuals, warranty info
• Preventive maintenance tasks and intervals
• Spare parts management and stock control
• Customer training and support basics

Overview

Practical sessions form a critical component of this course, allowing learners to apply theoretical knowledge in a controlled workshop environment. Learners will perform hands-on installation tasks including cable termination, equipment mounting, power supply setup, and system commissioning, reinforcing safe work practices and quality standards.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Cable Termination and Testing — Learners practice stripping, terminating and testing coaxial, twisted pair and fibre optic cables using appropriate tools and test equipment. (8h)
  • Practical 2: Rack and Equipment Mounting — Learners install equipment into a 19-inch rack, manage cables, and apply grounding and labelling standards. (8h)
  • Practical 3: Power Supply and UPS Installation — Learners wire AC/DC power supplies, connect a UPS, and test power quality and backup functionality. (8h)
  • Practical 4: System Integration and Commissioning — Learners interconnect multiple devices, configure basic settings, and perform system-level tests to verify functionality. (8h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
