Day 1: Introduction to Firearm Sighting Systems

Day 2: Fundamentals of Optics and Light

Objectives:
• Explain basic principles of light refraction, reflection, and magnification.
• Describe how optical coatings affect sight performance.
• Identify common optical aberrations and their impact.
• Understand lens cleaning techniques to avoid damage.

• Physics of light: refraction, reflection, magnification
• Optical coatings: anti-reflective, hydrophobic
• Common aberrations: chromatic, spherical, coma
• Proper lens cleaning methods and solutions

Day 3: Non-Optical Sighting Systems: Design and Function

Objectives:
• Describe the design and function of iron sights and aperture sights.
• Explain sight radius and its effect on accuracy.
• Identify common issues with non-optical sights.
• Demonstrate basic inspection of iron sights.

Day 4: Optical Sighting Systems: Types and Components

• Describe internal components: lenses, erector system, turrets.
• Explain the importance of eye relief and parallax.

Day 5: Cleaning and Maintenance of Non-Optical Sights

• Inspect for wear, corrosion, and damage.
• Perform basic adjustments and tightening.

Day 6: Cleaning and Maintenance of Optical Sights

• Use lens cleaning solutions and microfiber cloths correctly.
• Inspect seals, O-rings, and nitrogen purge integrity.
• Identify fogging, moisture ingress, and coating damage.

Day 7: Mounting and Alignment Procedures

• Use alignment tools: bore sighters, collimators.
• Torque specifications and thread locking.

Day 8: Zeroing and Calibration

• Define zeroing and its importance for accuracy.

• Determine when repair or replacement is needed.

• Evaluate if maintenance was successful.

Day 13: Legal, Safety, and Quality Standards

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
