This course equips team leaders and supervisors with the tactical skills needed to plan, execute, and evaluate small team operations in dynamic environments. Participants will learn to apply leadership principles, make critical decisions under pressure, and ensure team safety and effectiveness. The training bridges theory and practical application for real-world operational scenarios.

Target Audience

Current or aspiring team leaders, supervisors, and operational managers in security, emergency services, military, or corporate environments who lead small teams in tactical or high-stakes situations.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, prior experience in a team leadership role is beneficial.

Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Tactical Leadership and Team Dynamics

Objectives:
• Understand the roles and responsibilities of a tactical small team leader.
• Identify the principles of command and control within small teams.
• Apply communication protocols and standard operating procedures.
• Analyse the impact of leadership styles on team performance.

Topics:
• Introduction to tactical small team operations and leadership.
• Command and control structures in small teams.
• Communication systems and radio protocols.
• Team roles, responsibilities, and accountability.
• Leadership styles and situational leadership.
• Decision-making models for tactical environments.
• Standard operating procedures (SOPs) and drills.
• Ethical and legal considerations in tactical operations.

Day 2: Tactical Planning and Mission Preparation

Objectives:
• Conduct mission analysis and develop tactical plans.
• Use the operations order (OPORD) format effectively.
• Implement risk management and contingency planning.
• Prepare and conduct pre-mission briefings.

Topics:
• Mission analysis: factors, constraints, and intent.
• The operations order (OPORD) format and brief.
• Tactical planning process: from receipt to execution.
• Risk management: identifying and mitigating threats.
• Contingency planning and branches.
• Intelligence preparation of the battlefield (IPB).
• Logistics and resource allocation for small teams.
• Pre-mission briefings and rehearsals.

Day 3: Small Team Tactics and Movement Techniques

Objectives:
• Execute individual and team movement techniques.
• Apply formations, patrol procedures, and tactical drills.
• Conduct reconnaissance and security operations.
• Respond to contact and perform immediate actions.

Topics:
• Fire team and squad formations (file, wedge, line, etc.).
• Movement techniques: bounding, overwatch, and infiltration.
• Patrol procedures: planning, rally points, and harbours.
• Reconnaissance and surveillance techniques.
• Security operations: perimeter defence, observation posts.
• Contact drills: immediate action, break contact, and withdrawal.
• Urban and rural tactical considerations.
• Navigation and land navigation integration.

Day 4: Advanced Tactical Operations and Leadership Challenges

Objectives:
• Lead small teams in complex tactical scenarios.
• Execute ambushes, raids, and deliberate attacks.
• Manage stress, casualties, and combat fatigue.
• Adapt plans in dynamic environments.

Topics:
• Ambush and raid planning and execution.
• Deliberate attacks and assault procedures.
• Urban operations: room clearing and building tactics.
• Counter-ambush and counter-IED drills.
• Casualty evacuation (CASEVAC) and medical planning.
• Stress management and resilience under fire.
• Decision-making under pressure: OODA loop.
• After-action reviews (AAR) and learning integration.

Day 5: Integrated Practical Exercise and Leadership Assessment

Objectives:
• Demonstrate leadership in a full-spectrum tactical scenario.
• Integrate all skills from previous days.
• Conduct after-action reviews and provide feedback.
• Assess leadership competencies and areas for development.

Topics:
• Scenario-based practical exercise: mission from planning to debrief.
• Leadership under simulated operational conditions.
• Real-time decision-making and adaptation.
• Team coordination and communication under stress.
• After-action review (AAR) processes.
• Peer and instructor feedback on leadership performance.
• Personal development planning for continued growth.
• Course summary and certification criteria.

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
