Description

This course equips learners with the competence to conduct vehicle fitness evaluations for roadworthiness assessment in accordance with South African regulatory standards. It covers systematic inspection procedures, defect identification, and reporting to ensure vehicles meet legal safety requirements. Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Vehicle Fitness and Roadworthiness

Objectives:

• Identify the roles and responsibilities of a vehicle fitness assessor.
• Recognize the importance of vehicle fitness for road safety.

• The role of the assessor in the roadworthiness system.

Day 2: Vehicle Identification and Documentation

Objectives:
• Verify vehicle identification numbers (VIN) and engine numbers.
• Check registration documents and licence discs.
• Identify alterations that may affect roadworthiness.
• Understand the importance of accurate record-keeping.

• Locating and interpreting VIN, chassis number, and engine number.
• Checking registration documents: validity, ownership, and endorsements.
• Identifying tampering or mismatch of identification numbers.
• Documentation requirements for imported or rebuilt vehicles.
• Record-keeping procedures and forms.

Day 3: Lighting and Electrical Systems Inspection

Objectives:
• Inspect headlamps, tail lamps, indicators, and brake lights.
• Check electrical wiring for damage and proper insulation.
• Test battery condition and charging system.
• Assess reflectors and auxiliary lighting compliance.

• Headlamp alignment and brightness requirements.
• Functionality of turn signals, hazard lights, and stop lamps.
• Inspection of wiring harness, fuses, and connections.
• Battery terminals, electrolyte levels, and secure mounting.
• Reflectors: colour, placement, and condition.

Day 4: Brake System Assessment

Objectives:
• Inspect brake components: pads, discs, drums, and linings.
• Test brake fluid level, condition, and leaks.
• Evaluate brake performance: pedal feel and stopping distance.
• Check parking brake operation and adjustment.

• Visual inspection of brake pads, shoes, and rotors.
• Brake lines and hoses: cracks, bulges, and leaks.
• Brake fluid: type, level, and contamination.
• Master cylinder and brake booster function.
• Brake test: pedal reserve, fade, and imbalance.
• Parking brake: ratchet mechanism and holding ability.

Day 5: Steering and Suspension Systems

Objectives:
• Inspect steering components for wear and play.
• Check suspension: springs, shock absorbers, and bushings.
• Assess wheel alignment and tyre wear patterns.
• Verify power steering fluid and belt condition.

• Steering box, rack, and tie rod ends: free play and leaks.
• Ball joints and control arm bushings: wear and tear.
• Shock absorbers: leaks, mounting, and damping.
• Coil springs and leaf springs: cracks and sagging.
• Wheel alignment: camber, caster, and toe.
• Tyre wear patterns indicating suspension issues.

Day 6: Tyres and Wheels Inspection

Objectives:
• Measure tyre tread depth and check for damage.
• Inspect tyre sidewalls for bulges, cuts, and cracks.
• Verify tyre size, load index, and speed rating.
• Check wheel rims for cracks, bends, and corrosion.
• Assess wheel nuts and studs for tightness and condition.

• Tyre age: DOT code interpretation.
• Sidewall damage: impact breaks, cuts, and bulges.
• Tyre pressure and valve condition.
• Wheel rim: runout, cracks, and balance weights.

Day 7: Body, Chassis, and Underbody Inspection

Objectives:
• Inspect body panels for rust, dents, and structural integrity.
• Check chassis for cracks, bends, and corrosion.
• Assess underbody components: exhaust, fuel tank, and lines.
• Verify door, bonnet, and boot operation and seals.

• Exhaust system: leaks, hangers, and catalytic converter.
• Fuel tank: mounting, leaks, and filler cap.

Day 8: Engine and Drivetrain Inspection

Objectives:
• Check engine for leaks, unusual noises, and fluid levels.
• Inspect belts, hoses, and cooling system.
• Assess drivetrain: clutch, gearbox, and differential.
• Verify engine mounting and vibration dampeners.

• Engine oil level, condition, and leaks.

• Drive belts: tension, cracks, and wear.
• Clutch: pedal free play, slipping, and noise.

Day 9: Safety Equipment and Interior Checks

• Assess mirrors, windscreen, and wipers for condition and visibility.

• Airbag: warning light, sensors, and deployment readiness.
• Rear-view mirrors: condition and adjustment.
• Windscreen: chips, cracks, and optical distortion.

Day 10: Emissions and Environmental Compliance

Objectives:
• Understand emission standards for petrol and diesel vehicles.
• Conduct exhaust gas analysis using a gas analyser.
• Check for visible smoke and excessive noise.
• Verify compliance with environmental regulations.

• Emission limits: CO, HC, NOx, and particulate matter.
• Gas analyser operation: calibration and measurement.
• Diesel smoke test: opacity limits.
• Exhaust system integrity: leaks and catalytic converter.
• Noise levels: exhaust and engine noise limits.

Day 11: Specialised Vehicle Inspections (Trucks, Buses, Trailers)

• Inspect heavy vehicle braking systems (air brakes).
• Check coupling devices and fifth wheels.
• Assess load securing and overhang compliance.
• Verify tachograph and speed limiter operation.

Day 15: Practical Inspection Workshop - Light Vehicles

• Perform a complete roadworthiness inspection on a light vehicle.

• Identify and document all defects.
• Demonstrate correct use of inspection equipment.

Day 16: Practical Inspection Workshop - Heavy Vehicles

Objectives:
• Perform a complete roadworthiness inspection on a heavy vehicle.
• Inspect air brake systems and coupling devices.
• Assess load security and vehicle dimensions.
• Complete heavy vehicle inspection report.

• Heavy vehicle inspection: chassis, brakes, and coupling.
• Air brake system: leakage test and adjustment.
• Fifth wheel and kingpin inspection.
• Load restraint: tie-downs and weight distribution.
• Height, width, and length measurements.

Day 17: Assessment, Review, and Certification

Objectives:
• Complete a final practical assessment on a sample vehicle.
• Review key concepts and common pitfalls.
• Receive feedback on inspection performance.
• Obtain certification and understand continuous professional development.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
