Course Outline

Day 1: Foundational Fleet Safety & Pre-Trip Procedures

Objectives:
• Understand legal and safety requirements for fleet operations
• Identify key components of a pre-trip inspection
• Demonstrate correct use of vehicle controls and instruments
• Recognise common hazards in fleet driving
• Apply basic defensive driving principles

Day 2: Manoeuvring & Practical Driving Skills

• Execute safe starting, stopping, and turning techniques
• Perform reversing and parking manoeuvres with confidence
• Manage vehicle stability and load distribution
• Navigate junctions, roundabouts, and lane changes safely
• Apply smooth acceleration and braking for fuel efficiency

• Starting and stopping techniques on different surfaces
• Turning: left, right, U-turn, and tight spaces
• Reversing: straight, left/right, and using mirrors
• Parking: parallel, angled, and loading bay
• Load management: weight distribution, securing, and shifting

Day 3: Advanced Driving & Emergency Response

Objectives:
• Identify and respond to emergency situations (brake failure, tyre blowout)
• Apply skid control and evasive manoeuvres
• Manage fatigue and driver wellness
• Understand load-specific risks (hazardous materials, overhanging loads)
• Use communication protocols for emergencies

• Emergency braking: ABS vs non-ABS, threshold braking
• Skid control: causes and recovery techniques
• Tyre blowout: proper response
• Evasive manoeuvres and collision avoidance
• Driver fatigue: signs, prevention, and rest breaks
• Load-specific considerations: dangerous goods, abnormal loads
• Emergency communication: radio, phone, and incident reporting
• First aid basics for drivers

Day 4: Route Planning, Assessment & Professionalism

Objectives:
• Plan efficient and safe routes using maps and GPS
• Conduct a full pre-trip inspection independently
• Demonstrate professional driver behaviour and customer service
• Complete a practical driving assessment
• Reflect on personal development areas

• Route planning: GPS, maps, traffic, and weather considerations
• Trip planning: rest stops, fuel, and delivery schedules

Overview

Learners will apply classroom theory through supervised hands-on sessions, including pre-trip inspections, manoeuvring exercises, emergency response drills, and a final practical driving assessment. These practicals ensure competence in real-world fleet operations.

Practical Activities

Pre-Trip Inspection Practice — Learners perform a full pre-trip inspection on a fleet vehicle, identifying defects and completing documentation. (3h)
Manoeuvring & Parking Exercises — Learners practice reversing, turning, and parking in a controlled area, including loading bay and parallel parking. (4h)
Emergency Response Drills — Simulated emergencies: brake failure, tyre blowout, and skid recovery on a skid pan or wet surface. (3h)
Final Practical Driving Assessment — Learners complete a supervised on-road drive that includes pre-trip inspection, urban and highway driving, and manoeuvres. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
