Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Ship Construction and Terminology

Objectives:
• Understand the historical evolution of ship construction methods.
• Identify the main components of a ship's structure.
• Define key ship construction terms.
• Explain the role of classification societies and regulatory bodies.
• Recognise the different types of ships and their structural features.

Topics:
• Overview of shipbuilding history and modern practices
• Ship types: cargo vessels, tankers, passenger ships, naval vessels
• Basic ship structure: hull, superstructure, decks, bulkheads
• Key terminology: keel, frames, stringers, plating, stiffeners
• Introduction to classification societies (Lloyd's, DNV, ABS)
• Regulatory framework: SOLAS, MARPOL, IMO conventions

Day 2: Materials and Strength of Ship Structures

Objectives:
• Describe the properties of materials used in ship construction.
• Explain the principles of structural strength and stability.
• Identify different types of stresses acting on a ship.
• Understand the concept of longitudinal and transverse strength.
• Discuss corrosion protection methods.

Topics:
• Shipbuilding materials: steel, aluminium, composites, wood
• Mechanical properties: tensile strength, yield, ductility
• Types of stresses: tensile, compressive, shear, bending, torsional
• Longitudinal strength: hogging and sagging
• Transverse strength: frames, beams, girders
• Corrosion types and prevention: coatings, cathodic protection, anodes

Day 3: Hull Construction and Structural Components

Objectives:
• Describe the construction of the hull and its subdivisions.
• Identify the structural components of the hull.
• Explain the purpose of watertight integrity and subdivision.
• Understand the construction of bulkheads and tanks.
• Discuss the role of stiffeners and structural arrangements.

Topics:
• Hull forms: single hull, double hull, double bottom
• Shell plating: strakes, seams, butts
• Framing systems: transverse, longitudinal, combined
• Bulkheads: watertight, non-watertight, collision bulkheads
• Decks and platforms
• Tanks: ballast, fuel, cargo, and their construction

Day 4: Superstructure, Outfitting, and Specialised Structures

Objectives:
• Explain the design and construction of superstructures and deckhouses.
• Describe the structural considerations for cargo handling and mooring.
• Identify specialised structures for different ship types.
• Understand the integration of machinery and piping.
• Discuss the principles of fire protection and insulation.

Topics:
• Superstructure design: strength, stability, accommodation
• Deckhouses, masts, and funnels
• Cargo access: hatches, ramps, cranes, derricks
• Mooring and anchoring equipment: bollards, fairleads, windlasses
• Specialised structures: ice-strengthened hulls, offshore vessels
• Fire protection: bulkheads, insulation, fire doors, sprinklers

Day 5: Construction Processes, Quality Control, and Practical Integration

Objectives:
• Outline the ship construction process from design to delivery.
• Understand quality control and testing methods.
• Explain the role of welding and joining techniques.
• Discuss survey and certification requirements.
• Integrate knowledge through case studies and practical applications.

Topics:
• Shipbuilding process: design, material procurement, fabrication, assembly
• Welding techniques: arc, MIG, TIG, resistance welding
• Nondestructive testing (NDT): ultrasonic, radiographic, magnetic particle
• Survey and certification: hull surveys, load line, tonnage measurement
• Case studies: construction of a container ship and an oil tanker
• Future trends: modular construction, automation, green shipbuilding

Practicals

Overview

The practicals provide hands-on experience with ship structural components, welding techniques, and inspection methods. Learners will apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios, reinforcing understanding of construction principles and quality control.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Identification of Ship Structural Components — Using scale models and structural drawings, learners identify and label key ship components such as keel, frames, bulkheads, and plating. (4h)
  • Practical 2: Welding Simulation and Joint Inspection — Learners perform simulated welding on plate samples and inspect welded joints for defects using visual and dye penetrant methods. (4h)
  • Practical 3: Hull Plating and Stiffener Arrangement — Using a small-scale hull model, learners arrange and fit stiffeners and plating to understand load paths and structural integrity. (4h)
  • Practical 4: Watertight Integrity Testing and Inspection — Learners conduct a watertight integrity test on a model compartment and inspect for leaks, then prepare a survey report. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
