Day 1: Introduction to Chemical Pulp Production

Day 2: Pulping Chemistry and Process Parameters

• Identify critical process parameters (temperature, pressure, chemical concentration)
• Understand the role of cooking chemicals
• Describe the effect of process variables on pulp quality

• Chemistry of lignin removal
• Cooking chemicals: white liquor composition
• Effect of temperature and pressure on delignification

Day 3: Kraft Pulping Process

Day 6: Monitoring Pulp Quality Parameters

Overview

Hands-on practicals are essential for developing skills in operating and monitoring chemical pulping equipment, using process control systems, and analyzing pulp quality. Learners will work in a simulated or lab-scale pulping environment to apply theoretical concepts.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Laboratory Pulping and Kappa Number Determination — Learners perform small-scale kraft pulping in a laboratory digester and measure kappa number to assess delignification. (8h)
  • Practical 2: Process Control Loop Tuning — Using a simulated DCS, learners tune PID controllers for temperature and pressure loops in a digester. (8h)
  • Practical 3: Pulp Quality Analysis and Online Sensor Calibration — Learners use lab instruments and online sensors to measure pulp viscosity, brightness, and consistency, and calibrate sensors. (8h)
  • Practical 4: Environmental Monitoring and Odor Control — Learners monitor TRS emissions using a portable gas analyzer and simulate NCG collection system operation. (8h)
  • Practical 5: Integrated Process Optimization Simulation — In a team, learners use a dynamic process simulator to optimize a kraft pulping line for yield and energy efficiency. (8h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
