Centrifugal Gravity Concentration Process Material Separation Training

SAQA US 110195 | NQF 2 | Credits 5 | Duration 2 Days
From $832 per delegate

Description

This course provides learners with the knowledge and skills required to operate centrifugal gravity concentration equipment for material separation in mineral processing. It covers the principles of centrifugal force, equipment setup, operational parameters, and safety procedures to ensure efficient and safe separation processes.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate the principles of centrifugal gravity concentration and its application in material separation.
  • Prepare and set up centrifugal gravity concentration equipment according to standard operating procedures.
  • Operate the equipment to achieve optimal separation efficiency while monitoring key process parameters.
  • Analyze separation performance and adjust operational variables to improve recovery and grade.
  • Apply safety protocols and identify hazards associated with centrifugal gravity concentration processes.
  • Evaluate the impact of feed characteristics on separation outcomes and implement corrective actions.

Target Audience

This course is designed for plant operators, process technicians, and supervisors in the mining and minerals processing industry who are responsible for operating or overseeing centrifugal gravity concentration systems.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment.

Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of Centrifugal Gravity Concentration

Objectives:
• Explain the principles of centrifugal gravity concentration.
• Identify key components of centrifugal concentrators.
• Describe the factors affecting separation efficiency.
• Understand the role of feed characteristics in process performance.

Topics:
• Introduction to gravity concentration methods

• Types of centrifugal concentrators (e.g., Knelson, Falcon)
• Key operating parameters: rotational speed, fluidization water, bed depth
• Feed preparation: particle size, pulp density, and liberation
• Factors influencing recovery and grade
• Overview of applications in mineral processing
• Safety considerations in operation

Day 2: Operational Optimization and Troubleshooting

Objectives:
• Optimize centrifugal concentrator settings for target minerals.
• Analyze process performance using recovery and grade curves.
• Diagnose common operational issues and implement corrective actions.
• Integrate centrifugal concentration into a processing circuit.
• Apply quality control and sampling techniques.

Topics:
• Setting up and calibrating a centrifugal concentrator
• Process optimization: adjusting parameters for maximum efficiency
• Monitoring performance: mass balance, recovery, and grade calculations
• Troubleshooting: common problems and solutions (e.g., blinding, wear)
• Integration with grinding, classification, and other unit operations
• Sampling protocols and data interpretation
• Maintenance planning and wear management
• Case studies and best practices

Practicals

8 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Hands-on practicals allow learners to operate a centrifugal concentrator, adjust parameters, and analyze separation performance. Learners will conduct test runs, collect samples, and interpret results to optimize recovery.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Operation and Parameter Adjustment — Learners operate a laboratory-scale centrifugal concentrator, adjusting rotational speed and fluidization water flow to observe effects on concentrate grade and recovery. (3h)
  • Practical 2: Performance Evaluation and Analysis — Learners conduct a series of test runs with a prepared feed, collect samples, and perform mass balance calculations to determine recovery and grade. (3h)
  • Practical 3: Troubleshooting and Optimization — Learners diagnose simulated operational issues (e.g., reduced recovery, high tailings grade) and implement corrective actions to optimize performance. (2h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
