Day 1: Introduction to Hopper Clarifiers and Solution Clarification Principles

Objectives:
• Understand the purpose and applications of hopper clarifiers in mineral processing and water treatment.
• Identify key components and their functions.
• Explain the basic principles of sedimentation and clarification.
• Describe safety protocols and personal protective equipment requirements.

• Feedwell, launder, rake mechanisms, and discharge systems
• Principles of hindered settling and flocculation
• Factors affecting clarification efficiency (particle size, density, flow rate)

• Safety procedures and hazard identification
• Documentation and record-keeping basics

Day 2: Hopper Clarifier Operation and Process Control

Objectives:
• Perform start-up, normal operation, and shutdown procedures.
• Monitor and adjust process parameters (underflow density, overflow clarity, rake torque).
• Troubleshoot common operational issues.
• Interpret process data and make informed adjustments.

• Start-up sequence: filling, flocculant preparation, feed initiation
• Operating parameters: feed rate, underflow withdrawal, flocculant dosage
• Monitoring tools: turbidity meters, density gauges, rake torque indicators
• Common problems: ragging, scum formation, overload conditions
• Troubleshooting: cause-and-effect analysis
• Adjusting flocculant dose for changing feed characteristics
• Shift handover and logbook practices
• Emergency shutdown procedures

Day 3: Advanced Clarification Techniques, Maintenance, and Practical Integration

Objectives:
• Apply advanced strategies to optimize clarification performance.
• Perform routine maintenance and inspection tasks.
• Conduct practical exercises to reinforce skills.
• Evaluate overall system performance and recommend improvements.

• Advanced flocculant selection and optimization
• Dealing with variable feed conditions and upset events
• Maintenance schedules: rake gearbox, pump seals, launder cleaning
• Inspection of wear parts and structural integrity
• Performance metrics: recovery efficiency, underflow density targets
• Environmental and regulatory compliance
• Case studies: real-world operational challenges
• Integration of practical skills from Day 1 and 2

Overview

Practical sessions provide hands-on experience with hopper clarifier operation, including start-up, shutdown, parameter adjustments, and troubleshooting. Learners will operate a pilot-scale clarifier, prepare and dose flocculant, and interpret process data to reinforce theoretical concepts.

Practical Activities
  • Pre-Start Inspection and Start-Up — Learners conduct a pre-start safety inspection of the clarifier and ancillary equipment, then perform the start-up sequence including filling the tank and initiating feed. (2h)
  • Flocculant Preparation and Dosing — Learners prepare a flocculant solution at the correct concentration and dose it into the feedwell while observing floc formation. (2h)
  • Normal Operation and Parameter Adjustment — Learners monitor key parameters (overflow clarity, underflow density, rake torque) and make adjustments to optimize performance. (3h)
  • Troubleshooting and Shutdown — Learners diagnose and resolve common operational issues such as rag accumulation or high rake torque, then perform an orderly shutdown. (3h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.
