Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and practical skills to safely operate a man rider winch for personnel transport in mining and industrial environments. It covers pre-operational inspections, safe loading and unloading, emergency procedures, and compliance with relevant South African legislation and safety standards.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate the ability to conduct pre-operational inspections and identify defects on a man rider winch and its components.
  • Apply safe operating procedures for personnel transport, including correct loading, unloading, and communication protocols.
  • Analyze potential hazards and risks associated with man rider winch operations and implement appropriate control measures.
  • Evaluate emergency situations and execute emergency stop and rescue procedures effectively.
  • Implement maintenance and record-keeping procedures in accordance with manufacturer specifications and regulatory requirements.
  • Comply with relevant South African legislation, codes of practice, and site-specific safety rules governing man rider winch operations.

Target Audience

This course is designed for operators, supervisors, and safety personnel who are responsible for or involved in the use of man rider winches for transporting personnel in underground or surface mining operations, as well as in other industrial settings where such equipment is used.

Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of Man Rider Winch Systems and Safety

Objectives:
• Understand the legal framework and SAQA unit standard requirements for man rider winch operations.
• Identify key components and technical specifications of man rider winch systems.
• Explain pre-use inspection procedures and hazard identification.
• Describe safe communication protocols and emergency procedures.
• Demonstrate knowledge of personal protective equipment (PPE) and fall arrest systems.

Topics:
• Introduction to SAQA Unit Standard 110159 and legal compliance (Mine Health and Safety Act).
• Types of man rider winches: drum, friction, and hydraulic systems.
• Components: ropes, sheaves, brakes, controls, and safety devices.
• Pre-use inspection checklist: visual, mechanical, and electrical checks.
• Hazard identification: environmental, mechanical, and human factors.
• Communication protocols: hand signals, radios, and backup systems.
• Emergency procedures: power failure, rope slip, and entrapment scenarios.
• PPE requirements: helmets, harnesses, lanyards, and fall arrest systems.

Day 2: Operation, Maintenance, and Practical Application

Objectives:
• Perform safe start-up, operation, and shutdown of a man rider winch.
• Apply correct load handling and personnel transport techniques.
• Conduct routine maintenance and fault-finding procedures.
• Execute emergency response drills and rescue operations.
• Complete a practical assessment demonstrating competency.

Topics:
• Operating procedures: start-up checks, speed control, and load monitoring.
• Personnel transport: boarding, securement, and ride protocols.
• Load handling: weight limits, balance, and dynamic forces.
• Routine maintenance: lubrication, rope inspection, and brake testing.
• Fault-finding: common issues and corrective actions.
• Emergency response drills: manual override, evacuation, and rescue.
• Record keeping: logbooks, inspection reports, and incident documentation.
• Practical assessment: simulated operation and emergency scenario.

Practicals

8 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Learners will engage in supervised hands-on practice covering pre-use inspection, safe operation, routine maintenance, and emergency response. Practical sessions ensure competency in man rider winch operation and compliance with unit standard outcomes.

Practical Activities
  • Pre-Use Inspection and PPE Setup — Learners conduct a full pre-use inspection of the winch system, including ropes, brakes, controls, and safety devices, and correctly don and adjust PPE. (2h)
  • Winch Operation and Personnel Transport — Under supervision, learners operate the winch to transport personnel, including start-up, speed control, communication, and safe passenger boarding/alighting. (3h)
  • Routine Maintenance and Fault-Finding — Learners perform routine maintenance tasks such as lubricating components, inspecting ropes, and testing brakes, and diagnose common faults. (1h)
  • Emergency Response and Rescue Drill — Learners participate in simulated emergency scenarios, including power failure, rope jam, and rescue of a stranded passenger using manual override. (1h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
