Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to safely and effectively remove impurities from nickel briquettes through a reduction process. Participants will understand the underlying chemical principles, operate relevant equipment, and apply quality control measures to produce high-purity nickel.

Target Audience

This course is designed for process operators, metallurgical technicians, and production supervisors working in nickel refining or hydrometallurgical plants who are responsible for impurity removal operations.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment, but a basic understanding of metallurgical processes is recommended.

Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of Nickel Briquette Impurity Removal via Reduction

Objectives:
• Understand the principles of reduction processes for impurity removal in nickel briquettes
• Identify common impurities and their impact on nickel quality
• Describe the reduction reaction mechanisms and key process parameters
• Apply safety protocols and quality control measures in reduction operations
• Interpret process data to optimize impurity removal efficiency

Topics:
• Overview of nickel briquette production and impurity challenges
• Chemistry of reduction: oxidising agents, reducing agents, and reaction thermodynamics
• Key impurities: iron, cobalt, copper, and sulphur – sources and removal strategies
• Process parameters: temperature, pressure, residence time, and gas flow rates
• Equipment used in reduction: kilns, furnaces, and gas handling systems
• Quality control: sampling, analysis, and specification compliance
• Safety considerations: handling of reducing gases, high temperatures, and hazardous materials
• Troubleshooting common issues: incomplete reduction, re-oxidation, and energy efficiency

Overview

Hands-on practicals allow learners to observe and control reduction process parameters, analyse impurity levels before and after treatment, and apply quality control procedures. These sessions reinforce theoretical knowledge and build competence in operating reduction equipment safely.

Practical Activities
  • Reduction Furnace Operation — Learners operate a small-scale reduction furnace under supervision, adjusting temperature and gas flow to remove impurities from nickel briquettes. (1h)
  • Impurity Analysis Before and After Reduction — Learners take samples of nickel briquettes before and after reduction, prepare them for analysis, and interpret results to evaluate impurity removal efficiency. (1h)
  • Process Optimisation and Troubleshooting — Learners simulate process variations (e.g., low temperature, insufficient reducing gas) and adjust parameters to restore optimal impurity removal, documenting their actions. (1h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
