Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to safely and efficiently recover organic solvents from aqueous metal solutions using distillation techniques. It covers the principles of distillation, equipment operation, and safety protocols specific to handling volatile solvents and metal solutions. Upon completion, learners will be able to apply distillation processes in industrial settings to recover solvents, reduce waste, and comply with environmental regulations.

Course Outline

Day 1: Principles and Practice of Organic Solvent Recovery from Aqueous Metal Solutions

Objectives:
• Understand the thermodynamic basis for distillation separation of organic solvents from aqueous metal solutions.
• Identify key equipment and process parameters for solvent recovery distillation.
• Apply safety and quality control measures in solvent recovery operations.
• Perform basic calculations for distillation efficiency and solvent purity.
• Evaluate environmental and economic benefits of solvent recovery.

Topics:
• Introduction to solvent recovery in hydrometallurgy: importance and applications.
• Phase equilibria: vapour-liquid equilibrium for solvent-water systems.
• Distillation equipment: columns, reboilers, condensers, and decanters.
• Process parameters: temperature, pressure, reflux ratio, and feed composition.
• Quality control: sampling, analysis (GC, Karl Fischer), and purity specifications.
• Safety: flammability, toxicity, and handling of organic solvents.
• Environmental compliance: waste minimisation and solvent recycling.
• Troubleshooting common issues: foaming, flooding, and solvent losses.

Practicals

Overview

Hands-on practical sessions allow learners to operate a bench-scale distillation unit, measure key process parameters, and analyse solvent purity. These activities reinforce theoretical concepts and develop operational skills.

Practical Activities
  • Distillation Column Setup and Startup — Learners assemble and start up a small distillation column with a feed of simulated aqueous solvent mixture, following standard operating procedures. (1h)
  • Sampling and Analysis of Distillate and Bottoms — Learners take samples from distillate and bottoms streams, perform Karl Fischer titration for water content, and use a refractometer to estimate solvent purity. (1h)
  • Optimisation of Reflux Ratio and Solvent Recovery — Learners adjust the reflux ratio and observe its effect on distillate purity and recovery rate, then calculate recovery efficiency. (1h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
