This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to safely and efficiently recover precious metals from combustible waste using incineration processes. It covers the principles of incineration, metal recovery techniques, environmental compliance, and health and safety protocols essential for industrial operations.

Target Audience

This training is designed for operators, technicians, and supervisors in waste management, recycling, and metallurgical industries who are involved in or responsible for precious metal recovery from waste streams.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, learners should have basic literacy and numeracy skills.

Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of Precious Metal Recovery and Incineration

Objectives:
• Understand the principles of precious metal recovery from combustible waste.
• Identify types of combustible waste containing precious metals.
• Explain the role of incineration in metal recovery processes.
• Describe the basic components and operation of an incinerator.
• Recognize safety and environmental considerations in incineration.

Topics:
• Introduction to precious metals: gold, silver, platinum group metals.
• Sources of precious metal-containing combustible waste (e-waste, catalysts, jewellery scrap).
• Overview of recovery methods: incineration, chemical leaching, smelting.
• Principles of combustion and incineration.
• Incinerator types: rotary kiln, fluidized bed, multiple hearth.
• Key parameters: temperature, residence time, oxygen supply.
• Safety hazards: toxic fumes, fire, explosion, heavy metal exposure.
• Environmental regulations and emission control.

Day 2: Incineration Process and Ash Handling

Objectives:
• Outline the step-by-step incineration process for precious metal recovery.
• Explain factors affecting recovery efficiency.
• Describe ash collection and handling procedures.
• Perform calculations for material balance and recovery yield.
• Identify quality control measures for ash and recovered metals.

Topics:
• Feedstock preparation: sorting, shredding, blending.
• Incineration process control: temperature profiling, air flow, feed rate.
• Combustion products: flue gas, bottom ash, fly ash.
• Ash collection systems: cyclones, baghouses, electrostatic precipitators.
• Ash sampling and analysis for metal content.
• Material balance calculations: input vs output.
• Factors influencing recovery: ash fusion, volatilization, slag formation.
• Quality assurance: moisture content, particle size, metal grade.

Day 3: Advanced Recovery Techniques and Practical Integration

Objectives:
• Evaluate post-incineration processing methods (leaching, smelting).
• Design a basic recovery flow sheet for a given waste stream.
• Apply troubleshooting techniques for common incineration issues.
• Integrate safety and environmental management into operations.
• Assess economic viability and scale-up considerations.

Topics:
• Post-incineration recovery: acid leaching, cyanidation, smelting.
• Refining processes: electrolysis, precipitation, solvent extraction.
• Flow sheet design: from waste to pure metal.
• Troubleshooting: incomplete combustion, slagging, metal losses.
• Environmental management: waste water treatment, emission monitoring.
• Economic analysis: cost of incineration vs value of recovered metals.
• Case studies: industrial applications (e-waste recycling, catalytic converters).
• Regulatory compliance: SAQA unit standard 110436 requirements.

Practicals

12 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Learners will gain hands-on experience in operating a pilot-scale incinerator, handling ash, and performing basic recovery techniques. Practical sessions reinforce theoretical concepts and develop skills in process control, safety, and quality assurance.

Practical Activities
  • Incinerator Startup and Operation — Learners will start up a small incinerator, load prepared waste samples, and monitor combustion parameters. (4h)
  • Ash Collection and Sampling — Learners will collect bottom and fly ash from the incinerator, perform sampling, and prepare samples for analysis. (3h)
  • Metal Recovery from Ash via Leaching — Learners will perform a small-scale acid leaching process on ash samples to recover gold and silver. (3h)
  • Quality Control and Yield Calculation — Learners will analyze leach solutions using simple test kits, calculate recovery yield, and complete a quality control report. (2h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
