Basic Strata Support Underground Coal Mining Training

SAQA US 110202 | NQF 2 | Credits 5 | Duration 2 Days
From $832 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the fundamental knowledge and skills required to install basic strata support in underground coal mining operations. It focuses on safe installation practices, identification of strata conditions, and adherence to legal and safety requirements. Successful learners will be able to contribute to a safe and productive mining environment.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the basic principles of strata control and support types used in underground coal mining.
  • Identify and interpret strata conditions to determine appropriate support requirements.
  • Apply safe working procedures during the installation of basic strata support.
  • Install basic strata support according to specified standards and instructions.
  • Evaluate installed support for compliance with safety and quality requirements.

Target Audience

This course is designed for new entrants to the underground coal mining industry, including mining assistants, support workers, and learners who require foundational training in strata support installation.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment.

Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of Strata Support in Underground Coal Mining

Objectives:
• Understand the principles of strata mechanics and the importance of support in underground coal mines.
• Identify different types of strata support systems and their applications.
• Explain the legal and safety requirements for strata support according to South African mining regulations.
• Describe the role of geological conditions in selecting appropriate support methods.

Topics:
• Introduction to strata mechanics and ground control.
• Types of strata support: roof bolts, mesh, props, and packs.
• Legal framework: Mine Health and Safety Act, and relevant SANS codes.
• Geological factors affecting strata stability.
• Basic design principles for support systems.
• Installation procedures and quality control.
• Hazard identification and risk assessment related to strata failure.

Day 2: Practical Application and Maintenance of Strata Support Systems

Objectives:
• Demonstrate correct installation techniques for common support elements.
• Conduct visual inspections and tests to verify support integrity.
• Apply problem-solving skills to address support failures or adverse conditions.
• Comply with safe working procedures during support operations.

Topics:
• Step-by-step installation of roof bolts and mesh.
• Use of mechanical and resin anchors.
• Inspection criteria for support systems.
• Common defects and remedial actions.
• Handling of support materials and equipment.
• Emergency response to roof falls.
• Documentation and reporting requirements.
• Integration with other mining activities.

Practicals

8 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Practical sessions provide hands-on experience with strata support installation, inspection, and maintenance. Learners will practice using tools and equipment under supervision to ensure competence and safety compliance.

Practical Activities
  • Installation of Roof Bolts and Mesh — Learners install mechanical and resin roof bolts and wire mesh in a simulated underground environment. (3h)
  • Inspection and Testing of Support Systems — Learners conduct visual and instrument-based inspections of installed supports to identify defects. (2h)
  • Responding to Strata Failure Scenarios — Learners role-play emergency response to a simulated roof fall, including barricading and reporting. (2h)
  • Support Material Handling and Safety — Learners practice safe manual handling and storage of support materials. (1h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
