Vacuum Tank Filter Operation For Liquid Solid Separation Training

SAQA US 110402 | NQF 2 | Credits 4 | Duration 1 Day
From $691 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and practical skills to operate vacuum tank filters for liquid solid separation in industrial processes. Participants will understand the principles of filtration, safely start up and shut down equipment, and perform routine maintenance to ensure efficient separation. The course emphasises safety protocols and adherence to standard operating procedures.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate the ability to start up, operate, and shut down a vacuum tank filter system according to standard operating procedures.
  • Apply safety protocols and identify potential hazards associated with vacuum tank filter operation.
  • Monitor and adjust filtration parameters to achieve optimal liquid solid separation.
  • Perform routine inspections and basic maintenance on vacuum tank filter components.
  • Analyse common operational problems and implement corrective actions.
  • Record and report operational data accurately for process control and compliance.

Target Audience

This course is designed for process operators, plant technicians, and maintenance personnel who are responsible for operating vacuum tank filters in industries such as mining, chemical processing, water treatment, and food processing. It is also suitable for supervisors overseeing liquid solid separation operations.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment.

Course Outline

Day 1: Vacuum Tank Filter Operation for Liquid Solid Separation

Objectives:
• Understand the principles of liquid solid separation using vacuum tank filters
• Identify key components and their functions in a vacuum tank filter system
• Describe safe operating procedures and routine maintenance tasks
• Apply troubleshooting techniques for common operational issues
• Interpret performance data to optimize separation efficiency

Topics:
• Introduction to liquid solid separation and vacuum filtration principles
• Components of a vacuum tank filter: tank, vacuum pump, filter media, discharge system
• Pre-start checks and startup procedures
• Monitoring and controlling vacuum pressure, feed rate, and cake thickness
• Shutdown procedures and cleaning protocols
• Routine maintenance: filter media inspection and replacement, pump checks
• Troubleshooting common problems: poor filtration, vacuum loss, cake discharge issues
• Safety considerations: lockout/tagout, PPE, handling of process materials

Practicals

3 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Hands-on practical sessions allow learners to apply theoretical knowledge by operating a vacuum tank filter, performing start-up and shutdown procedures, monitoring key parameters, and conducting basic maintenance and troubleshooting tasks under supervision.

Practical Activities
  • Pre-Start Checks and Startup — Learners perform pre-start inspections, verify system readiness, and execute the startup sequence for a vacuum tank filter. (1h)
  • Monitoring and Adjusting Operation — Learners monitor operating parameters, record data, and make adjustments to maintain optimal separation performance. (1h)
  • Shutdown, Cleaning, and Basic Maintenance — Learners perform a controlled shutdown, clean the filter media and tank, and carry out routine maintenance tasks. (1h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
