Description

This course equips learners with the competence to plan, prepare for, and conduct a service training session in a workplace or customer-facing environment. It covers the full cycle from needs identification through delivery and evaluation, ensuring that service standards are consistently met and improved.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Service Training Principles

Objectives:
• Understand the purpose and scope of service training.
• Identify the roles and responsibilities of a service trainer.
• Recognise the legislative framework governing service training in South Africa.
• Explain the principles of adult learning and their application in service training.

Topics:
• Overview of service training and its importance.
• Roles of a service trainer vs. facilitator.
• SAQA and NQF requirements for unit standard 119751.
• Adult learning principles (Knowles' theory).
• Learning styles and their impact on training.
• Ethical considerations in training delivery.
• Introduction to training needs analysis.

Day 2: Planning and Preparing for Service Training

Objectives:
• Outline the steps to plan a service training session.
• Develop training objectives aligned with unit standards.
• Select appropriate training methods and materials.
• Prepare a training schedule and resource list.

Topics:
• Setting SMART training objectives.
• Training methods: lecture, demonstration, role-play, group work.
• Selecting and adapting training materials.
• Developing session plans and timetables.
• Identifying and arranging resources (venue, equipment, handouts).
• Risk assessment and contingency planning.
• Preparing assessment tools (checklists, rubrics).

Day 3: Facilitating Service Training Sessions

Objectives:
• Demonstrate effective facilitation techniques.
• Manage group dynamics and learner participation.
• Use questioning and feedback to enhance learning.
• Adapt training delivery to diverse learner needs.

Topics:
• Facilitation skills: active listening, questioning, paraphrasing.
• Handling difficult participants and conflicts.
• Encouraging participation and group interaction.
• Using visual aids and technology effectively.
• Providing constructive feedback.
• Techniques to address different learning paces.
• Time management during sessions.

Day 4: Assessing Learner Performance

Objectives:
• Design formative and summative assessments for service training.
• Conduct assessments according to unit standard requirements.
• Record and report assessment results accurately.
• Provide feedback to learners on assessment outcomes.

Topics:
• Types of assessment: formative vs. summative.
• Designing practical and theoretical assessments.
• Assessment criteria and evidence requirements.
• Conducting assessments: observation, questioning, portfolio review.
• Recording assessment results on prescribed forms.
• Moderating assessments for fairness.
• Giving constructive feedback and identifying gaps.
• Principles of assessment (validity, reliability, fairness).

Day 5: Evaluating and Improving Service Training

Objectives:
• Evaluate the effectiveness of service training sessions.
• Collect and analyse feedback from learners and stakeholders.
• Identify areas for improvement and implement changes.
• Compile a training report and close out the training cycle.

Topics:
• Evaluation models (Kirkpatrick's four levels).
• Methods for collecting feedback: surveys, interviews, focus groups.
• Analysing feedback data to measure outcomes.
• Identifying gaps and recommending improvements.
• Updating training materials and session plans.
• Reporting to stakeholders.
• Continuous professional development for trainers.
• Final assessment and certification requirements.

Practicals

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
