Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of On-Off Control Devices

Objectives:
• Identify and describe common on-off control devices used in HVAC-R systems.
• Explain the operating principles of thermostats, pressure switches, and contactors.
• Interpret wiring diagrams and schematics for basic control circuits.
• Apply safety procedures when working with electrical control devices.

Topics:
• Overview of on-off control in refrigeration and air conditioning cycles.
• Types of control devices: thermostats, pressure switches, contactors, relays.
• Operating principles: bimetallic strips, capillary tubes, diaphragm actuators.
• Electrical ratings, contact configurations (SPST, SPDT, etc.).
• Reading and interpreting wiring diagrams for simple control circuits.
• Safe isolation and lockout/tagout procedures.

Day 2: Circuit Analysis and Troubleshooting

Objectives:
• Analyse series and parallel control circuits for fault diagnosis.
• Use multimeters to test continuity, voltage, and resistance in control devices.
• Diagnose common faults such as stuck contacts, open coils, and short circuits.
• Implement corrective actions and replacement procedures for faulty components.

Topics:
• Detailed circuit analysis: series and parallel control configurations.
• Using multimeters: measuring voltage, resistance, and continuity.
• Common fault scenarios: welded contacts, burnt coils, corrosion.
• Step-by-step troubleshooting methodology.
• Replacement procedures for thermostats, pressure switches, and contactors.
• Practical exercises: fault-finding on trainer panels.

Day 3: Advanced Applications and System Integration

Objectives:
• Integrate multiple on-off control devices into complete refrigeration/AC systems.
• Calibrate and adjust setpoints for thermostats and pressure switches.
• Evaluate system performance and energy efficiency implications of control settings.
• Comply with SAQA unit standard 116226 assessment requirements.

Topics:
• Multi-device control sequences: defrost timers, fan cycling, safety interlocks.
• Calibration techniques for temperature and pressure setpoints.
• Energy efficiency considerations: differential settings, anti-short cycle timers.
• System commissioning: verifying control operation under load conditions.
• Documentation and reporting of control settings and test results.
• Final assessment: practical demonstration of control device testing and adjustment.

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
