Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Hand Tools and Measuring Instruments in HVACR

Objectives:
• Identify common hand tools and measuring instruments used in HVACR trades.
• Explain the importance of tool selection and safety.
• Demonstrate proper handling and storage of tools.
• Understand the relationship between tools and system components.

Topics:
• Overview of HVACR systems and components.
• Categories of hand tools: wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, cutters.
• Introduction to measuring instruments: thermometers, pressure gauges, multimeters.
• Tool safety and personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Tool storage and maintenance basics.

Day 2: Hand Tools for Mechanical Fastening and Assembly

Objectives:
• Select appropriate wrenches and screwdrivers for different fasteners.
• Use pliers and cutters safely and effectively.
• Apply torque correctly to prevent damage.
• Perform basic assembly tasks using hand tools.

Topics:
• Types of wrenches: open-end, box-end, adjustable, socket.
• Screwdriver types: flathead, Phillips, Torx, hex.
• Pliers: slip-joint, needle-nose, locking.
• Cutting tools: tin snips, hacksaws, tubing cutters.
• Torque specifications and use of torque wrenches.

Day 3: Specialized Hand Tools for HVACR Systems

Objectives:
• Identify tools specific to refrigeration and air conditioning.
• Use flaring and swaging tools for tubing connections.
• Apply pipe threading tools correctly.
• Demonstrate safe use of refrigeration service tools.

Topics:
• Flaring tools and swaging blocks.
• Tubing benders for copper and aluminum.
• Pipe threading dies and taps.
• Refrigeration manifold gauges and hoses.
• Vacuum pumps and micron gauges.
• Leak detection tools: electronic leak detectors, bubble solutions.

Day 4: Measuring Instruments – Temperature and Pressure

Objectives:
• Explain principles of temperature and pressure measurement.
• Calibrate and use thermometers and pressure gauges.
• Interpret readings to assess system performance.
• Identify common measurement errors and how to avoid them.

Topics:
• Temperature measurement: bimetallic, thermocouple, RTD, infrared.
• Pressure measurement: Bourdon tube, diaphragm, electronic sensors.
• Manifold gauge sets for high and low side pressure.
• Psychrometers and humidity measurement.
• Calibration procedures and standards.

Day 5: Electrical Measuring Instruments for HVACR

Objectives:
• Use multimeters to measure voltage, current, and resistance.
• Apply clamp meters for AC/DC current measurement.
• Test capacitors, diodes, and continuity.
• Interpret electrical diagrams and troubleshoot basic circuits.

Topics:
• Digital multimeter (DMM) functions and settings.
• Measuring AC/DC voltage and current.
• Resistance and continuity testing.
• Capacitor testing with capacitance meters.
• Clamp meters for in-circuit current measurement.
• Safety precautions when working with electricity.

Day 6: Airflow and Combustion Measuring Instruments

Objectives:
• Measure airflow using anemometers and manometers.
• Calculate air velocity and volume in ducts.
• Use combustion analyzers for gas appliances.
• Interpret combustion efficiency readings.

Topics:
• Anemometers: vane, hot-wire, and thermal types.
• Manometers: digital and inclined tube for pressure differential.
• Pitot tubes and airflow measurement.
• Combustion analyzers: O2, CO2, CO, temperature.
• Draft gauges and pressure switches.
• Indoor air quality instruments: CO detectors, particle counters.

Day 7: Precision Measurement and Layout Tools

Objectives:
• Use micrometers and calipers for precise measurements.
• Apply levels and squares for alignment.
• Measure thread pitch and drill sizes.
• Ensure accuracy in fabrication and installation.

Topics:
• Micrometers: outside, inside, depth.
• Calipers: vernier, dial, digital.
• Levels: spirit, laser, digital.
• Combination squares and protractors.
• Thread pitch gauges and drill bit gauges.
• Tape measures and rulers for layout.
• Temperature and humidity data loggers.

Day 8: Tool Maintenance, Calibration, and Safety

Objectives:
• Perform routine maintenance on hand tools and instruments.
• Calibrate measuring instruments to manufacturer specifications.
• Identify unsafe tools and procedures.
• Apply lockout/tagout and safe work practices.

Topics:
• Cleaning and lubricating tools.
• Sharpening cutting tools.
• Replacing batteries and fuses.
• Calibration intervals and records.
• Tool inspection for damage.
• Electrical safety for instruments.
• Lockout/tagout procedures.
• Fire safety and first aid for tool-related injuries.

Day 9: Practical Integration and Assessment

Objectives:
• Apply tools and instruments to diagnose HVACR system faults.
• Perform a complete system check using appropriate tools.
• Demonstrate safe and efficient work practices.
• Complete a practical assessment covering all unit standard requirements.

Topics:
• Hands-on fault diagnosis using manifold gauges, multimeters, and thermometers.
• Measuring superheat and subcooling.
• Checking electrical components: contactors, relays, motors.
• Airflow measurement and adjustment.
• Combustion analysis for gas furnaces.
• Final practical assessment.
• Review of key concepts and Q&A.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
